CJUS 645 Introduction to Restorative Justice

This course focuses upon assisting students in understanding philosophical and practical underpinnings of the restorative justice movement and its role within the criminal justice system. The course will discuss and assess various strategies for the implementation of restorative justice within a criminal justice setting with a focus on identifying the root causes of inequalities that may occur within the criminal justice system.

The purpose of this course is to provide students with an understanding of restorative justice principles, ideals, and practices so that they may successfully contribute to conversations about integrating restorative justice into their communities. Students will also develop knowledge and skills related to the appropriate application of restorative justice and responding to criticisms of restorative justice to help create safe restorative justice programs that will have the support of key stakeholders.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each Discussion. Each thread must be 350 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 1 other classmate’s thread. Each reply must be 175 words.

Justice Program/Policy Analysis Assignment

The student will write a 10-12 page research-based paper in current APA format that focuses on theories associated with restorative justice. The paper must include at least 2 references in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible. 

Persuasive Letter Assignment

The student will write a 7-8 page research-based paper in current APA format that focuses on developing community support for restorative justice. The paper must include at least 2 references in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible.

Developing a Restorative Justice Intervention Assignment

The student will write a 10-12 page research-based paper in current APA format that focuses on developing a restorative justice intervention. The paper must include at least 2 references in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible. 

Critical Examination of a Restorative Justice Intervention Assignment

The student will write a 15-17 page research-based paper in current APA format that focuses on the benefits and limitations of restorative justice. The paper must include at least 2 references in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible. 

Quizzes (3)

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned and previous Module: Week. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 20 multiple-choice and true/false questions and 1 essay question and have a 40-minute time limit. Each multiple-choice and true/false question will be worth 2 points while the essay question will be worth 10.
