Course Description

This course focuses on the key legal issues facing law enforcement leaders as related to specific HR strategies and best practices and the evolving civil rights issues facing law enforcement.  Students will be introduced to historical and current legal precedent, including the ramifications of legal issues on the practices of effective leadership in the law enforcement context.

Rationale

CJUS 534 is a required course for the online Masters in Criminal Justice. This course explores the intersection of civil rights, media influence, and criminal justice leadership. Law Enforcement leaders must be knowledgeable in employment law, managing media influence, and all aspects of civil rights.

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

Discussions (4)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be 400–600 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. All statements of fact must be supported with citations in current APA format (at least 3 in each thread). In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to two (2) other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 250–400 words and include at least 1 citation in current APA format. Each thread and reply must include at least 1 Holy Bible reference. 

The student will submit two (2) critical review assignments covering pre-selected topics that impact the effectiveness of law enforcement leaders. This assignment will require the student to compare and contrast two (2) articles and then discuss how they are related to the overall topic of law enforcement leadership and civil liberties. One of the articles must be from the assigned readings located in the Learn section for that module. The second article will be found by utilizing the Liberty University library resources. The papers must be 5–7 pages, be written in APA format, include a minimum of 3 references, and the integration of at least one Biblical concept that relates to the assigned topic.

Final Project Assignments (3)

The student will work on a final project throughout the course that will consist of three separate assignments which will focus on identifying the need for a diversity hiring policy within law enforcement agencies.

Final Project Assignment: Policy Development 

The student will submit research the best practices related to diversity hiring and develop a department policy. The assignment must be 3–5 pages, include an introduction, at least 2 peer-reviewed references, and be written in APA format.

Final Project Assignment: Diversity Hiring Policy

The student will develop the recruiting, hiring, and training components of the policy that was submitted for Part I. This assignment must be 3–5 pages, include the 2 peer-reviewed references, at least 1 interview with a law enforcement leader, and be written in APA format.

Final Project Assignment: Training and Implementation 

For the final part of the assignment, the student will continue the search of best practices for diversity hiring by looking at the curriculum used by at least one police agency in its academy training. The student will then develop a plan to incorporate diversity issues into academy and sustainment training. Part III must be 3–5 pages, include at least 2 peer-reviewed references not previously used, at least one review of a law enforcement academy's curriculum and be written in APA format. Part III must be combined with the first two parts of the assignment and submitted as one document.

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned modules. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain short answer questions, and have a 1 hour and 15-minute time limit.
