Rationale
Training in the foundations of how to thrive as a sports chaplain in an ecumenical setting is of paramount importance for chaplains today. Understanding the current and future issues that sports chaplains will encounter prepares sports chaplains to minister efficiently in any mission field they are called to serve.

Discussions (2)
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each Discussion. Each thread must be 400 words. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 200 words. Each thread and reply must demonstrate course-related knowledge of the subject matter under discussion, as well as biblical support as the context applies. Each thread will be a direct reflection of the student’s chosen sports chaplaincy field. Reflection questions will be provided in the prompt. Any sources used, scripture included, must be cited according to current Turabian guidelines. (CLO: A, C)
Observation Evaluation Paper Assignments (3)
The student will complete 3 observations that regard 3 different sports chaplaincy industries. Mentorship from afar can be described as the lesson the student learns from observing people in their element, even if the student does not get the chance to interact or speak with them directly. For this assignment, the student will observe chaplains in three distinct sports venues to learn from afar how the work of a sports chaplain may remain consistent or change depending on the demands of the specific sport and/or individual sports chaplain. The student will write a paper that explores why they choose that specific type of sports chaplain to observe, the lessons the student learned from participating in mentorship from afar, and how the observation has impacted the student’s thoughts on sports chaplaincy as a future endeavor. Each of the evaluations must be at least 900 words and incorporate at least 2 scholarly sources (published within the last five years) in addition to applicable citations from the course textbook(s). The paper must also include a conclusion, and it must utilize footnotes and a bibliography formatted according to current Turabian standards. The student must organize their thoughts in the paper using relevant headings and subheadings. (CLO: B)

Sports Chaplaincy Paper: The Human Side Assignment
The student will write a 1,200 word research based paper that focuses on the human aspects of sports chaplaincy ministry. The assignment will explore the personal and professional aspects of sports chaplaincy and how they are guided by scripture. The student must address spiritual coping, the meaning of pastor to some, chaplain to all, and how to navigate as a chaplain in the present-day world. The paper must be completed in current Turabian format and include a minimum of 3 scholarly references, professional journals, and/or books published within the last 5 years. The student must do all of the following in their paper: organize thoughts in the paper using relevant headings and subheadings; include a conclusion to the paper; and include footnotes and a bibliography for the sources in current Turabian format. Sports Chaplaincy Paper: The Ministry Side Assignment
The student will write a a 1,200 word research based paper that focuses on the ministry aspect of sports chaplaincy. The assignment will explore the aspects of ministry and mentoring involved with sport chaplaincy and how they are guided by scripture. The student must address how one develops as a chaplain, what ministry opportunities provide the room for individual growth, and how to edify other chaplains as one progress as a sports chaplain. The paper must be completed in current Turabian format and include a minimum of 3 scholarly references, professional journals, and/or books published within the last 5 years. The student must do all of the following in their paper: organize thoughts in the paper using relevant headings and subheadings; include a conclusion to the paper; and include footnotes and a bibliography for the sources in current Turabian format. Sports Chaplaincy Paper: The Community Side Assignment
The student will write a 1,200 word research based paper that focuses on the community aspects of sports chaplaincy. The assignment will explore the aspects of community with sports chaplaincy and how they are guided by scripture. The student must address methods to replenish the person within a community/church home, answer the question of how sports chaplaincy intertwines with small groups within a community, and address what support systems they will initiate and utilize as they serve amongst other sports chaplains in their respective industries. This paper must be completed in current Turabian format and include a minimum of 3 scholarly references, professional journals, and/or books published within the last 5 years. The student must do all of the following in their paper: organize thoughts in the paper using relevant headings and subheadings; include a conclusion to the paper; and include footnotes and a bibliography for the sources in current Turabian format. Sports Chaplaincy Paper: The Rapport Side Assignment
The student will write a 1,200 word research based paper that focuses on the rapport aspect of sports chaplaincy. The assignment will explore the aspects of rapport within sports chaplaincy and how it is guided by scripture. The student must address the trust that is built based on rapport building, how confidentiality plays a role in sports chaplaincy, and some rapport-building exercises within sports chaplaincy as they relate to strengthening partnerships and establishing relationships within the sports chaplaincy community. This paper must be completed in current Turabian format and include a minimum of 3 scholarly references, professional journals, and/or books published within the last 5 years. The student must do all of the following in their paper: organize thoughts in the paper using relevant headings and subheadings; include a conclusion to the paper; and include footnotes and a bibliography for the sources in current Turabian format.
