Rationale
This course is designed to help the student understand the biblical nature of chaplaincy, comprehend the various types of chaplaincy ministry professions, explain the historical development of the chaplaincy from the early biblical days to today’s chaplaincy, understand the legal foundations of chaplaincy, illustrate the key roles of chaplains, and appraise key issues surrounding the chaplain ministry today. The study is correlated to the cultural and historical events in the chaplaincy in order to give students the tools to use and explain the role of the chaplain.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each Discussion. Each thread must be at least 400 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 200 words. For each thread, the student must support the assertions made with at least 1 scholarly source in current Turabian format. The student will write a 1,500 to 1,800-word research-based paper in current Turabian format that focuses on the biblical, theological, and philosophical foundations of chaplaincy. The paper must focus on the various biblical principles of chaplaincy, the theological nature of God as related to the nature of chaplaincy and fulfillment of GC2, and the philosophy of chaplaincy. The paper must include a minimum of 10 relevant Scripture references that relate to biblical, theological, and philosophical principles and at least 3 supporting references from course textbooks, books, scholarly journals, and/or articles. The student will write a 1,500 to 1,800-word research-based paper in current Turabian format that focuses on the chaplain’s legal authority. The paper must address the constitutional and religious freedom of chaplains, principles in the First Amendment religious clauses related to chaplaincy, Supreme Court decisions concerning religious freedom and chaplaincy, and congressional acts and regulations related to chaplaincy. The student will need to focus on identifying the specific aspects of authority and clearly communicating what these aspects are and how they enable/empower the chaplain. The paper must include a minimum of 5 relevant Scripture references that relate to legal authority and at least 5 supporting references from course textbooks, books, scholarly journals, and/or articles. The student will write a 1500 to 1800 word research based paper in current Turabian format that focuses on the chaplain’s religious authority and identity. The paper must reflect on the evangelical chaplain’s authority to accomplish the mission, characteristics of the evangelical chaplain, and various challenges evangelical chaplain’s face and how they can meet those challenges in the future. The paper will also address the chaplain endorser’s authority and the necessity and value of an ecclesiastical endorser. The paper must include a minimum of 10 relevant Scripture references that relate to religious authority and identity and at least 3 supporting references from course textbooks, books, scholarly journals, and/or articles. The student will write a 1500 to 1800-word research-based paper in current Turabian format that focuses on the chaplain’s personal foundation. The paper will focus on the chaplain’s personal life, skill, and hospitality. The paper must include a minimum of 10 relevant Scripture references that relate to a chaplain’s personal foundation and at least 3 supporting references from course textbooks, books, scholarly journals, and/or articles. The student will write a 1500 to 1800-word research-based paper in current Turabian format that focuses on chaplain leadership. The paper must address the calling, character, competence, and connection of the chaplain. Further, the paper will focus on leadership styles, including all of the following: transformational, relational, and servant leadership. The paper must include a minimum of 10 relevant Scripture references that relate to chaplain leadership and at least 3 supporting references from course textbooks, books, scholarly journals, and/or articles. For this assignment, the student will develop a PowerPoint presentation that will be submitted in Canvas along with the recorded presentation. The presentation should focus on the student’s chosen chaplain functional area. Utilizing Microsoft PowerPoint, the student will build a slide deck that follows the sections provided. The student needs to have at least one slide for each section. The presentation must include at least 5 sources and at least 10 Scripture references. After creating the PowerPoint, the student will use the record feature within PowerPoint to record the presentation. The student will submit both the recorded presentation and the PowerPoint file to Canvas for grading. Quizzes (2)
The Quiz: Chaplain Historical Roots will deal with the history of chaplaincy. The Quiz: Legal Authority will deal with the legality of chaplaincy in pluralistic settings. Each quiz will be limited to 1 hour, allow for 1 attempt, and be composed of 25 questions of varying types (multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, etc.). The student must take each quiz during the allotted time. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes and the internet may be used. (CLO: B, C, D, E, F)
