CHPL 200 Introduction to Chaplaincy
Course Description
This course examines the ministry of the chaplain from a biblical basis. Attention is given to the various functional areas of chaplaincy to include corporate, healthcare, military, education, prison, community, disaster relief, public safety, recreation, and sports. Finally, students will explore the skills, strategies, and character traits necessary for effective chaplain ministry within secular and sacred settings.

Discussions (3)
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each Discussion. Each thread must be 400 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 200 words. Each thread and each reply must incorporate at least 1 scholarly citation and 1 Scripture reference in Turabian format. Sources must include the readings for the week (textbooks, other websites) or the videos. (CLO: A, C, D)
Journal Assignments (6)
The student will complete 6 Journal entries in this course that focus on the Live Your Purpose: Interactive Guide. Students will complete ALL questions and activities for each day in the guide. After completing day 5, the student will respond to the weekly journal prompt with at least 300 words. For each entry, students must support their assertions with at least 1 Scripture reference in Turabian format. (CLO: D)
Chaplain’s Authority Paper Assignment
The student will write a 1200 to 1500-word research-based paper in current Turabian format that focuses on the Chaplain’s Authority. The paper must include a minimum of 8 Scripture references and at least 3 sources that can include course textbooks, books, scholarly journals, and articles. (CLO: A, D)
Chaplain Functional Area Project Assignments (3)
The student will complete a three-part project based on his/her selected chaplain functional area. (CLO: A, B, C, D)
Cultural Systems and Values Assignment:
The student will begin developing the PowerPoint presentation that will be completed later. This first draft will focus on the functional area description, cultural systems, and cultural values. The presentation must include at least 3 sources in addition to the course textbooks and 10 Scripture references.
Chaplain Interview Assignment:
The student will write a 1200 to 1500-word research-based paper in current Turabian format that focuses on an interview of a Chaplain. The paper must include at least 2 sources in addition to the course textbooks and a minimum of 5 Scripture references.
Presentation Assignment:
The student will develop and record a narrated PowerPoint presentation that focuses on the student’s chosen Chaplain Functional Area. The presentation must include at least 3 sources in addition to the course textbooks and 10 Scripture references.
Personal Reflection Paper Assignment
The student will write a 1000 to 1200-word reflection-based paper in current Turabian format that reflects on his/her knowledge of chaplaincy and focuses on pre-course knowledge, post-course knowledge, and future applications. The paper must include include a minimum of 8 Scripture references and at least 3 sources that can include course textbooks, books, scholarly journals, and articles. (CLO: C, D)
