CHMN 699 Internship

The Internship is designed for those with less than two years of full-time, paid vocational ministry experience. The ministry, mentor, and nature of involvement must be approved in advance by the Director of Experiential Education. Internship involves work in an applied ministry setting where students continue to apply, adapt, and improve their skills in a supervised ministry situation. In order to complete this internship, students must be working and/or serving in a church or ministry under the supervision of a qualified ministry leader and complete a minimum of 150 hours of internship.

The purpose of this course is to equip the student with the skills required to serve in a church/ministry setting. The student will reflect on his/her ministry calling and consider the future application of that calling. The student will learn to integrate his/her classroom work into practical ministry with special emphasis on leading, caring, proclaiming, relating and growing. The student will also work under a supervisor to minister effectively in his/her specific setting.

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview. 

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each Discussion. Each thread must be at least 250 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 1 other classmate’s thread. Each reply must be a minimum of 100 words. (CLO: B, D, E)

The student is responsible for submitting a log of hours using a MS Excel Spreadsheet or table in MS Word provided that will list each day the student worked, a brief description of his/her work, and the number of hours worked.

  • At the bottom of the spreadsheet/table the student will need to total his/her hours worked each day.
  • The student will include the ministry site name and include anything the student does which is ministry-related (i.e. office hours, coffee house time, visits, preparation/planning, etc.).
  • When the internship is completed, the student will email the spreadsheet/document to his/her supervisor and have the supervisor sign off on it. Then the student will ask the supervisor to email it back so he/she can upload it into the course. (CLO: E)

The site supervisor will prepare two evaluations on the student’s progress and ministry performance, especially in light of the project. The supervisor and student will meet to go through them together. After the meeting, the student will submit the supervisor’s evaluations. Evaluation forms are provided in the course. The student will flesh out one ministry internship project proposal. The student will confer with a site supervisor to determine what fits best in his/her internship context and choose one from the following:

  1. 4-6 week Discipleship Training
  2. 4-part teaching series (small group)
  3. 4-6 week youth event
  4. 4-6 week Children’s Ministry Event/Training
  5. 4-6 week Older Adults Ministry Workshop
  6. Digital Ministry Development
  7. 4-6 week Prayer Initiative
  8. Other ______________ (you may propose a project in consultation with the site supervisor)

Note: the project must be developed and completed during the course–no past projects or projects planned for the future will be accepted. (CLO: A, C, D)

The student will develop a strategic plan. The student must get approval from the site supervisor before submitting this plan. The plan must be 400-500 words in length and the student must include the following areas as headings for the plan: theological and biblical rationale, project scope and details, evaluation, and assessment plan. The student will launch his/her project (from the proposal and strategic plan). The purpose of this assignment is to practice leading in ministry either through biblical teaching or a ministry event. The student will plan and minister in conjunction with his/her site supervisor (and other ministry leaders, if applicable), incorporating a supervisor evaluation and an attendee’s feedback. The student will update/revise his/her project (from the launch stage). The purpose of this assignment is to adapt in leading in ministry either through biblical teaching or a ministry event. The student will make changes or revisions to his/her project based on previous evaluation and feedback. This project will help grow congregants in their Bible knowledge or help grow them in their service. (CLO: D, E)

The student will update/revise his/her project (from the first two stages). The purpose of this assignment is to adapt in leading in ministry either through biblical teaching or a ministry event. The student will make changes or revisions to his/her project. This project will help grow congregants in their Bible knowledge or help grow them in their service. (CLO: D, E)

The student will conduct a self-assessment, request and submit a site supervisor evaluation, and an attendee feedback form. The student will meet with the ministry site supervisor for the purpose of evaluating the student’s project. The supervisor will utilize the provided evaluation form for this meeting. (CLO: B).
