Survey of the History of Christianity – CHHI 300

Course Description

This course is an overview of Christianity from the Apostolic Age to the present. Special attention will be given to the early church period, the Protestant Reformation, the development of denominations, American Christianity, and World Christianity.

Rationale

This course provides a necessary addition toward the student achieving a well-rounded understanding of Christianity. It will more fully prepare graduates to understand different Christian theologies, denominations, movements, and trends as they interact with a variety of Christians and Christian groups. This course will also provide a needed apologetic understanding of various aspects of Christianity that will aid graduates as they interact with the larger world.

Discussion: Medieval Christianity

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, in the class, this thread will be submitted on Thursday by 11:59 pm (ET) and the replies submitted by Monday 11:59 pm (ET). The thread is designed to promote discussion among class members. The thread must be 200 words. The student will then read and post interactive replies (at least 75 words each) to the threads of at least 2 other students. For the initial thread, the student must support his/her assertations with at least two (2) scholarly citations in Turabian format. Each reply must incorporate at least one (1) scholarly citation in Turabian format. Any sources must have been published within the last five years. Acceptable source include and scholarly sources in book, article, and web formats. (CLO: A, D)

Video Discussion: The State of Christianity in the USA

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will complete one video discussion in this course. First, the student is required to post a 2-3-minute video thread in response to the provided prompt by 11:59 p.m. on Thursday of the assigned Module: Week. In addition to the video thread, the student will reply to at least two (2) other classmates with written posts of at least 200 words by 11:59 p.m. by Monday of the assigned Module: Week. The initial video thread must demonstrate course-related knowledge. The student can do this by mentioning information from the textbook or other academic sources within the recording. Further, each reply must contain at least one (1) scholarly source. Acceptable sources include the textbook and other scholarly materials. All sources used within the replies must make use of current Turabian formatting. (CLO: A, D, E)

The student will create a timeline by listing significant events, writings, and people chronologically. The date will be on the left-hand margin and a one-sentence to one-brief-paragraph description beside the date. The detailed timeline will be between 500 to 750 words and include at least 2 scholarly sources. The timeline will be formatted using current Turabian reference style. (CLO:  A, B)

Research Paper Assignments (2)

The student will write 2 research papers of 1,250 to 1,500 words each on assigned topics that will require research and analysis. Each research paper must include at least 6 scholarly sources. The student may use scholarly websites as sources, but at least two (2) of the required sources must come from scholarly articles and/or books. These papers will be formatted according to current Turabian style guide standards. (CLO: C, D)

An infographic is a document illustrating a concept. In this assignment, the student will complete the infographic by filling in blanks. (CLO:  A, C)

Essay: Christian History of a Global South Country Assignment

The student will write 1 essay of 500 to 750 words on an assigned topic that will require research and analysis. The essay must include at least 2 scholarly sources. The essay will be formatted according to current Turabian style guide standards. (CLO: B, D, E)

A microtheme is a brief overview of a topic, such as notes one would prepare to use while giving a presentation. In this assignment, the student will submit a microtheme that presents answer(s) to the question "[i]f we have one Bible, then why are there so many denominations and Chrisitan groups?" The microtheme will be 150 to 200 words long. The student should be sure to format the microtheme using current Turabian style. (CLO:  A, C, D, E)

Quizzes (6)

The student will complete 6 quizzes in this course based on the chapter readings. The quizzes are open-book/open-notes and comprised of 20 questions that can include multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, multiple dropdown, matching, multiple answer, and true/false questions. Each quiz will have a time limit of 45 minutes. Each quiz allows for one attempt. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E)
