Discussion: Communication Foundations, Communication Analysis, and Electronic Communication
Discussions are collaborative learning experience. Therefore, the student will complete one discussion within this course. The discussion will consist of two parts, the discussion thread and the discussion reply, each due in a separate Week: Module. For the discussion thread, the student will submit an original response in 250-350 words. In the thread, the student will cite two required sources, which will require the citation of the course textbook and one (1) full-text, peer-reviewed/scholarly article published within the last five (5) years and found within Liberty’s online library database. The most current APA formatting guidelines must be used to format in-text citations and the reference list for the thread. Then, the student will submit an original reply of 200-300 words in response to one (1) classmate who answered a different prompt/question. The student should promote further development of the topic using the 2-by-2 format. (FSLO: CIL 1, CIL 2, CIL 3, and CIL 4)
Homework: Aplia Assignments (8)
Aplia assignments cover the Learn material for the assigned Module: Week. Aplia Assignments assess the student’s recollection, understanding, and analysis of the material covered and evaluate student’s preparedness for a corresponding quiz. For each assignment, the student is given up to three attempts per section, and the highest score counts toward the grade once the “I’m Done, Grade Assignment Now” button has been clicked. Each Aplia contains a variety of question styles such as multiple-choice, true/false, checkboxes, radio buttons, and selection lists. All Aplias are open-book/open-notes. These assignments will be completed through the Cengage platform. (FSLO: CIL 1, CIL 3)
Research Project Assignment (3)
The Research Project is a scaffolded assignment designed to help the student practice professional research and communication skills while building toward a polished, original PowerPoint presentation. This project is completed in three parts over the course of the term.
Research Project: Part I: Topic Selection and Research Assignment
For Part I of the research project, the student will choose the topic and find information from three approved sources to support his/her topic. Using the template provided, the student will fill out the title page and begin filling out his/her APA-formatted reference page with his/her three approved sources. The three required sources include the course textbook, the Bible, and one full-text, peer-reviewed/scholarly article found in Liberty’s online library journal database and published within the last five (5) years.
Research Project: Part II: Content Organization and Research Assignment
For this assignment, using the template started in the previous assignment, the student will include points that support his/her topic, finish the required research, and include all five (5) required sources on a reference page. The student will find two additional peer-reviewed scholarly articles from Liberty’s online library (published within the last five years) for a total of five sources. Within the second page of the template, the student will address three main points in 3-4 sentences per point, with each paragraph describing the concept, explaining its importance, demonstrate critical thinking, and containing at least one citation to coincide with the matching source in your reference list. On the reference page of the template, the student will add the two additional approved articles and ensure the page is properly formatted in current APA style. This step will help the student prepare for detailed speaker notes required in Part III.
Research Project: Part III: Research PowerPoint Presentation Assignment
For this assignment, the student will use the research and main points previously obtained in the previous assignment and instructor feedback to create an original, professional-looking PowerPoint (PPT) presentation based on the chosen topic of professional communication. The presentation must include a title slide, at least 15 content slides with speaker notes for each slide, four relevant and professional-looking images/graphics within the presentation, and a reference page. All sources of the five required sources must be cited at least once on the content slides or in the speaker notes to be considered used. The in-text citations and reference slide must be formatted according to current APA format. (FSLO: CIL 1, CIL 2, CIL 3, and CIL 4)
Business Email Assignment
For this assignment, the student will submit a single MS Word document that includes the following information. First, the student will write a business scenario connected to his/her own business or career interests and use the scenario to write two distinct prompts that will be used to generate draft emails in Copilot. The student will paste these two prompts into Copilot to generate the emails and paste the unedited draft into the document. Then, the student will write two paragraphs that discusses each draft’s strengths and weaknesses related to clarity, tone, professionalism, and adherence to business email guidelines. Following this, the student will write a cohesive paragraph (5–6 sentences) explaining why he/she chose one draft over the other and what revisions are needed to meet professional standards. Finally, the student will write a concise, professional email response that reflects his/her company’s values and demonstrates courtesy, effective problem-solving, and adherence to business communication guidelines. The student will also include a references page that cites Copilot and the course textbook. (FSLO: CIL 1, CIL 2, and CIL 3)
