BMAL 501 Strategic Leadership and Management

This course provides a comprehensive perspective on leadership and management, from both an historical and current practices perspective. The link between management and leadership is examined and the application of leadership theory is explored. (Formerly BUSI 501) (Crosslisted with BMIS 501)

BMAL 501 benefits students in three ways: 1) In balance with studies of theory, this course emphasizes the practical side of developing the actual competencies and attitudes necessary for successful, effective leadership and management across organizations; 2) It considers how managers and leaders at all levels of an organization impact the effectiveness of top executives; and 3) It addresses the need for Christian leaders and managers to integrate their faith with their learning and actions regarding leadership and management across all types of organizations.

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will participate in 2 Discussions consisting of 2 parts: individual and collaborative. For the individual part, the student is required to post a thread of 700-850 words in response to the provided topic for each forum. Each thread must include references from at least 3 scholarly/peer-reviewed journal articles and 1 reference from the textbook. For the collaborative part, the student will post a 250-300 word reply to 2 classmates. Each reply should include at least 1 scholarly/peer-reviewed journal article.  The student must use current APA format.

The student will complete a Literature Review in 2 stages:

Literature Review: Annotated Bibliography and Outline Assignment

The student will submit an Annotated Bibliography of at least 10 references (in current APA format, with a cover page and abstract) that he or she plans on using for the research. Each reference must include a summary, analysis, determination of how the article will be utilized in the literature review, and an assessment. The student will also submit a detailed outline of at least 2 pages in current APA format.

Literature Review: Final Submission Assignment

The student will research and write a Literature Review in current APA format that focuses on a topic relevant to the contemporary issues and practices of leadership and management. The paper must be 1800-2100 words and include at least 10 references in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible.

This assignment will allow students to discuss how leadership styles, management styles, and types of power might affect the success of an organization. The student must write a 1200-1500-word  assessment in current APA format. The student must use at least 4 peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles published within the last 5 years and at least 1 citation from the Satterlee text.

Students will choose three important concepts learned from the textbook readings, presentations, websites and articles readings. The student will make two PowerPoint presentations, one from the Satterlee text and one from the Dees text. Students must complete 10-15 slides, including a title page and reference list, based on at least 3 peer-reviewed sources in addition to the text. The student must use current APA format.

The Summation Paper Assignment tests the student’s ability to look at three groups; leadership, management, and followership, and how these three groups’ have affected their place of employment, or have been affected in one of their previous places of employment.  The paper must be 1100-1300 words, include at least 3 scholarly/peer-reviewed journal articles and 1 reference from course textbooks, and be written in current APA format.

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned modules. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 22 multiple-choice, true/false, matching, and essay questions, and have a 1 hour time limit.
