AVIA 917 Advanced Qualitative Methods of Research

This course addresses the skills and knowledge necessary for completion of a qualitative dissertation including research design, data analysis and representation, methods for increasing trustworthiness, and ethical considerations in research with human subjects.

The doctoral dissertation is the final academic requirement for the student’s degree. This course is designed to equip students with a deeper understanding of research design and data analysis as well as the skills and knowledge necessary for writing and publishing a doctoral dissertation.

Video Discussion: Class Introductions

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will complete the Video Discussion: Class Introductions in a visual presentation format. The visual presentation must include a 2-minute minimum recorded presentation. Each student should be creative with their presentation. It is recommended that the student uses Kaltura to create the presentations. If a student is not comfortable with Kaltura, a technology medium must be used that allows the presentation to include the student’s face and audio. In addition to the initial video thread, the student must post 2 replies of at least 150-words.

Discussions (4)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will complete discussions in 2 parts. First, the student should post a new thread in response to the provided topic. Each thread must be a minimum of 500 words. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to the threads of at least 2 classmates. Each reply must be a minimum of 300 words. Research Plan Overview Elements Assignment

The student will submit his/her revised research plan outline completed during AVIA 817. Remember, the assignment was an iterative series of projects which built on previous work and integrated both professor comments and student peer review notes from the discussions. (CLO: B, C, D)

Dissertation Template Draft Assignment

Using the Research Plan Outline assignment and professor comments combined with peer replies, the student will create his/her working draft dissertation using the LUSOA dissertation template. The student’s work will include a beginning to the trustworthiness section in Chapter 3. This assignment will be 1,200 words minimum and include a minimum of 5 methodological and 10 topical references from scholarly peer-reviewed literature or applicable monographs (CLO: A, B, C, D)

Research Design Summary Assignment

The student is required to select and master the primary research text related to his/her study design from among those listed in the course syllabus. For example, case study designs can incorporate Robert Yin’s (2017) Case Study Research: Design and Methods. Those conducting transcendental phenomenological studies would use Clark Moustakas’s (1994) Phenomenological Research Methods. This assignment will be a minimum of 1,000 words and include a minimum of 3 sources. (CLO: B, C, D)

Dissertation Shell Assignment

The student will use the Dissertation Template Draft Assignment with professor comments, and combined with additional work, including the student’s interview guide information. The student will submit his/her working dissertation shell, including a refined trustworthiness section in Chapter 3. This assignment will contain a minimum of 2,000 words along with a minimum of 10 methodological and 20 topical references from scholarly peer-reviewed literature or applicable monographs (CLO: B, C, D)

IRB Training Modules Assignment

For this assignment, the student will complete his/her CITI certification for future IRB submissions. The student must complete this assignment to finish AVIA 917 and move to his/her dissertation sequence. (CLO: E)
