AVIA 542 Aviation Teaching and Learning Strategies

This course will cover teaching and learning theory and methods for the aviation discipline. The primary focus is on effective teaching and learning strategies for higher education students and adult learners. The use of instructional technologies and aviation learning laboratories for effective learning will be explored.

This course will prepare the student to understand and apply effective teaching and learning strategies in the classroom and in various types of aviation learning laboratories including flight simulation devices and other aviation training venues to assist the higher education student to maximize their potential.

Article Critique Assignments (3)

The student will research and select one article written 5 years ago or less that details effective learning strategies for students of aviation.  The student will write a 3 – 4 page paper.  In the paper, 1) provide a summary of the article, 2) offer a critique of the article, 3) explain how you may apply the concepts presented in an aviation education and training setting, and 4) explain how the concepts and principles presented may be viewed and/or applied from a biblical worldview. Goal Setting Exercise Assignment

The student will develop a written identity statement, worldview, personal vision statement, and achievable goals.  For the purpose of this exercise, the student will develop goals that can be achieved in this academic term. (CLO: A, F)

Learning Strategies Assessment Paper Assignment

The student will make a personal assessment of his or her personal learning strategies.  The student will write the results of the assessment in a 4 – 6 page paper in APA format. (CLO: A, B, C, F)

Teaching Strategies Plan Assignment

The student will investigate current research on aviation teaching methodologies and learning strategies. Incorporating the information gained through the textbooks, course discussions, and research of the literature, the student will conduct a case study to create a teaching strategy plan that addresses the emotional, psychological, physical, and spiritual needs of higher education aviation students.  The plan will be written into a 10-12 page paper in APA format, and it must include citations from the 2 textbooks and at least 5 peer reviewed research articles. The Title, Abstract, and Reference pages do not count toward the total page count. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E, F, G)

Reading Reflection Assignments (4)

The student will complete 4 Reading Reflection Assignments in this course. The student will write a thoughtful reflection of at least 3-4 pages on the assigned textbook readings as specified.  Each Reading Reflection Assignment has specific prompts to be addressed. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E, F, G)

Course Learning Reflections Assignment

The student will write a minimum 700-word essay reflecting on the experience in this course and the results of the goals exercise.  The reflection must answer the questions posed in the assignment instructions. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E, F, G)
