Course Description

This course examines the design and structuring of information for print publications. Students will combine their knowledge of typography and image creation with the principles and elements of page design to produce several portfolio-building systems. Lectures and studio work cover historical as well as current practices used in the production of multi-page documents.

Note: May be taken twice for credit.

Discussion Assignments (4)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each forum. Each thread must be at least 200 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 100 words.

Publication Analysis Assignment

The student will write a 300-word analysis in current MLA format, comparing and contrasting at least 3 different types of publications. The student must choose publications based on the type of publication he or she wishes to create in this course.

Publication Design Assignments

During this course, the student will design and create a custom publication. The publication must be 16 pages, including the front and back cover. The student will make the following submissions during the course for feedback and critique:

  1. Publication Design: Brief Assignment
  2. Publication Design: Layout and Design Part A Assignment
  3. Publication Design: Layout and Design Part B Assignment
  4. Publication Design: Image Selection Assignment
  5. Publication Design: Feedback Submission Assignment
  6. Publication Design: Original Illustration Assignment
  7. Publication Design: Final Submission Assignment

Quizzes (4)

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned Module: Weeks. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 multiple-choice questions, and have a 30-minute time limit.
