Course Description

This course will examine global strategy issues within the context of sport outreach. Nation, region, and outreach specific factors that determine outreach effectiveness will be analyzed. Key global sport outreach organizations will be examined to deepen students’ understanding of effective sport outreach theories and strategies. Students will develop a basic conceptual framework to formulate a strategy for undertaking sport outreach in a global setting.

Rationale

Much of formal sport ministry is conducted at the global level either through the mission field or in partnership with global organizations. The professional sport minister needs to know how to work in partnership successfully across cultures and needs to be familiar with global sport ministry organizations and resources.

Discussions (4)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide both a thread and replies. The student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be at least 400 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. A minimum of 1 peer-reviewed source and 1 Scripture reference must be used and cited in current APA format. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be a minimum of 250 words. (CLO: A, B, C)

The student will write a 3 – 5 page research-based paper in current APA format that focuses on the topic provided within the course. All written assignments are required to include a title page and reference page at the end of the paper. (CLO: A, B, D)

Exploring Sport Ministry Assignment

Incorporating ideas from Chapter 1 in the Corbett & Fikkert textbook, answer the following 2 questions: Why go? Why reach out and minister to people from other countries and cultures? Provide at least 1 Scripture reference for support. The focus with this question is for you to understand the necessity of ministering to others and to understand the different cultures that exist in the world. You need to review and study global ministry and various cultures prior to writing this assignment. By understanding global culture, it will improve your writing of why go? Why sport? Explain how sport can be used to support your reasons from question 1 and provide 1 tangible example in support of your assertions. As many of know and are aware, sport is a powerful tool used to connect millions of people around the world. If sport is so powerful in connecting people, why can’t Christianity be the same? For this question, focus on how sport creates a unified vision and culture amongst people. Combine sport and ministry to describe the efforts of sport ministry on a global scale. Be sure and provide examples of practice that are currently in use.

Global Impact of Christian Sport Ministries Assignment

Research, summarize, and report on the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) global IMPACT effort and describe how it fits in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ international strategic plan. For this assignment, you first want to describe and summarize what FCA is and how the history of the organization.

Then, you will want to explain the different efforts FCA provides not only to the US, but on a global scale. Analyze and describe what their international strategic plan consists of. Last, make sure you provide specific examples of how FCA has made a positive impact in sport ministry. List athletes who also have been involved with the organization. Cite at least 2 scholarly sources in support of your assertions.

Sports Ministry Plan: Location and Culture Assignment

Students will begin thinking of a specific place that could be a target of a sport ministry effort. Student will discuss and research the general culture, the socioeconomic environment, the sports culture, and religious environment of the area. Cite at least 3 scholarly sources in support of your assertions. Indicate the geographical area you will be studying and describe why this location was important to select.

Sports Ministry Plan: Travel and Team Development Assignment

Students will create a mock exercise of putting together an action plan for their journey. Please include the answers to the questions below in an essay format. Students will develop answers to questions such as: How will you travel? Who will be your team? What resources are needed? Students will provide an in-depth overview of the location of the area and services provided.

Sports Ministry Plan: Programming Assignment

Students will decide what programming will take place for the journey and what the action will be once the group arrives. Students will also discuss the specific target areas for ministry worship and the plan to reach out to each of the target areas (i.e., children, women, athletes).

Coach & Player Relationship Assignment

Approach this assignment from the perspective of a coach. Do you think a high context, high power distance relationship or a low context, low power distance relationship is appropriate between a coach and athletes? Is your answer dependent on culture, sport, gender, or age group? Provide at least 2 scholarly sources to support your position.

Followership in a Christian Society Assignment

Describe an international sport ministry context where you could be called on to follow the leadership of others. Provide at least 3 examples from the Pleuddemann textbook of cultural elements you ought to consider when preparing to be an effective follower. Questions to consider: What does it mean to be a follower? Is this necessarily always a good or bad thing? Explain. What are characteristics of effective leadership? Especially in the context of sport ministry. Who do you think exhibits these characteristics of an excellent leader in this field? What cultural elements can inhibit someone from being an effective leader? Are there times when a person is constrained to only do so much?

Sports Ministry Plan: Summary and Assessment Assignment

Students will assess the current situation of their plan and summarize the importance of the journey and how the plan will be developed. Reflect on these assignments by discussing the personal impact it can have on your growth as a follower of Jesus, as well as potential impact on your team and ministry location.
