Rationale
The course is designed to help the student develop basic understanding regarding social concepts and processes influencing health status and public mental health interventions. The course also hopes to help the student foster insight into at-risk populations and to develop strong, effective writing strategies for communicating about psychosocial issues in public mental health These overall aims are approached through readings, discussions, syntheses, journal article reviews, community needs health assessments, a community intervention paper and video assignment, and quizzes.

Discussions (3)
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided topic for each discussion. Discussion threads that answer the question(s) presented must be at least 500 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the initial main post, the student is required to reply to two other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 250 words.
Video Discussion: Public Mental Health in Your Community
The student will complete 1 Video Discussion in this course. For this Video Discussion Thread, the student will post one 7-minute video in which you respond to the provided prompt. The student must then post 2 video responses of at least 3 minutes.
Synthesis Assignments (8)
The student will complete 8 Synthesis Assignments in the course. The first part of the synthesis assignment should cover the main ideas and concepts discussed from each assigned textbook chapter from the module. The student must then note three weaknesses or limitations of the content from assigned readings followed by his/her major takeaway from the assigned readings. Next, the student must discuss how the assigned textbook chapters relate to his/her topic of interest in the public mental health field. Lastly, the student must include biblical integration. Each synthesis must be at least 2 pages in length (APA format).
Journal Article Review Assignments (4)
For each module, the student will complete a journal article review template of a peer-reviewed journal article related to his/her topic of interest in public mental health. The student must find the journal article related to his/her topic of interest and complete the journal article review template.
Community Health Need Assessment Assignments (2)
Community Health Needs Assessment Lynchburg Assignment
For the first Community Mental Health Needs Assessment Assignment, the student will discover the purpose of the assessment and research and detail the top needs in the Lynchburg, VA community.
Community Health Needs Assessment: Your Community Assignment
For the second Community Mental Health Needs Assessment Assignment, the student will compare and contrast the needs of the Lynchburg community to his/her own community.
Community Intervention Paper and Video Assignment
For the Community Intervention Assignment, the student will write a 5-page paper detailing the public mental health problem that he/she is interested in. The student must describe the magnitude of the public mental health problem followed by a proposed community mental health intervention designed to prevent and treat the mental health issue. After completing the paper, the student will then record a 3-5 minute elevator pitch video providing an overview of the proposed community intervention.
