Course Description

This course aids in preparation for careers in post-secondary education. Application is made to the development of teaching skills, higher-education assessment, curriculum development, classroom technology, and working with adult learners.

Rationale

Music Educators who pursue doctoral study are often interested in careers in post-secondary education.  Preparation for moving into higher education includes development in higher-education Teaching Skills, as well as higher-education Curriculum Development, Assessment, Professionalism and Culture, University and Departmental Shared Governance, working with Adult Learners, Time Management and Work Ethic, and using Classroom Technology.

Discussions (4)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must meet the required word count (300) and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to at least 2 other classmates' threads. Each reply must meet the required word count (150). Please cite outside sources referenced in Discussions in Turabian format.

Career-Specific Research Paper Assignments (2)

Career-Specific Research Paper Assignments (2) Each paper must be 1200–1250 words and use the assigned number of scholarly sources.

Critical Review Paper Assignments (3)

Critical Review Paper Assignments (3) The student will identify discipline-specific articles and write a 450-500 word critical review per article.

Assessment Tool Project Assignment

The student will create an assessment tool for a paper, project, or presentation. The student will assign the points for levels of mastery of the graded assignment he or she chooses.

Narrated PowerPoint Presentation Assignment

The student will create a narrated PowerPoint on a composer of his or her choice. The presentation should have 10–12 slides.

 Final Project Assignment

Part 1:  The student will identify 4 active job postings in his or her field. The student will highlight requirements, responsibilities, salary range, and other features of the college music teacher postings. This part of the project needs to be 350-400 words for each entry, double-spaced.

Part 2: The student will conduct an interview with a college music professor and report his or her findings in narrative form. The student will create 6–8 questions focused on learning about the professor’s background, education, experience, responsibilities, and tips or advice for an aspiring college music professor. The interview portion of your project needs to be between 700-750 words, double spaced.
