Course Description

Fundamental concepts of college algebra including sets, equations and inequalities, functions and graphs, polynomials, rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, linear inequalities, and linear programming.


Placement Score-Math with a score of 075 or (CLST 103 and Assessment - Mathematics with a score of 23 and Assessment - Mathematics II with a score of 15) or MATH 108 or MATH 110 or MATH 126 or MATH 128 or MATH 131


MATH 121 provides fundamental math skills needed for further study in mathematics, science, and liberal arts. This course fosters university-level competencies in analytical reasoning and is part of the liberal arts foundation needed to pursue higher education in many fields. Also, understanding mathematics gives us a greater appreciation of God’s creative wisdom since it is, to a large extent, the language of His natural revelation.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. The student will be able to correctly perform algebraic manipulations.
  2. The student will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the concept of functions to include evaluating functions, determining domains of functions, combining functions, and finding inverse functions with the proper use of functional notation.
  3. The student will be able to solve appropriate algebraic, exponential, and logarithmic equations and inequalities and systems of equations and inequalities.
  4. The student will be able to graph and analyze the graphs of algebraic, exponential, and logarithmic functions.
  5. The student will be able to employ techniques of problem solving.

    1. Analyze data and inform action through a structured method.

Discussion Board Forum

The student will participate in 1 Discussion Board Forum. Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for the forum. The thread must be at least 350 words. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 100 words (FSLO: CT 1, 2, 3).

Homework (6)

The student will complete six (6) homework assignments using WebAssign. A 70% or higher must be obtained on the homework assignment before the student may proceed to the quiz for those sections. (MLO: A,B,C,D,E ; FSLO: TSQR 1, 2, 3).

Quizzes (6)

The student will complete 6 quizzes using WebAssign. The student will be given 2 attempts at each quiz with only the higher score being counted. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes. Each quiz is timed and must be completed in a single sitting. (MLO: A,B,C,D,E ; FSLO: TSQR 1, 2, 3).

Test Reviews (3)

Test reviews will be similar to homework assignments. The student must complete the Test Review in WebAssign with a score of at least 70% on the Review before he/she may take the corresponding test. (MLO: A,B,C,D,E; FSLO: TSQR 1, 2, 3).

Tests (3)

The student will complete 3 tests using WebAssign. The student will be given 1 attempt at each test. Each test is timed and must be completed in a single sitting. (MLO: A,B,C,D,E; FSLO: TSQR 1, 2, 3).
