Course Description

Evaluates the needs of end users within the healthcare system; multi-phase project planning, evaluation, adoption and management of new technologies centered on effectively and efficiently exchanging electronic health information; evaluation of medical practice workflows and exploration of the functional needs of end-users while analyzing the fiscal and human resource commitments needed in diverse settings.

Rationale

Health Informatics, an evolving field, utilizes information technology to collect, store, process, and communicate data and knowledge related to the delivery and support of healthcare. A diverse discipline, Health Informatics incorporates processes, procedures, theories, and concepts from computer and information sciences, health sciences, and the social sciences. The ultimate goal of health informatics is to provide efficient and effective access, retrieval, and support in managing healthcare information while improving the overall health status of all.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Integrate a biblical worldview within informatics.
  2. Develop skills necessary to utilize health information technology for knowledge management.
  3. Describe key financial indicators related to the utilization of health information technology in an organization.
  4. Apply the systems development life cycle (SDLC) approach to the utilization of health information systems.

Discussion Board Forums (5)

Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each forum. Each thread must be at least 300 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 150 words. Each thread and reply must include a Scripture reference and at least 1 citation in current APA format.

Case Study Discussion Board Forums (3)

The student is required to participate in Case Study Discussion Board Forums in order to generate discussion, interact with each case study, and reflect on other students’ perspectives. The student is required to post 1 thread of at least 500 words in response to the assigned case study. The student will then post replies of at least 150 words to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each thread and reply must include an integration of biblical principles and have at least 1 Scripture reference and 1 additional scholarly resource cited in current APA format.

Research Project Part 1: Annotated Bibliography

The student will be placed into a group for the Research Project. Part 1 requires each group to research 15 scholarly articles from peer-reviewed journals in order to establish research for Part 3 of the Research Project. The student will use a provided template to annotate each source. Current APA format must be used. One member of the group will submit the final version of the Annotated Bibliography. The student is required to read all instructor feedback and implement it on future assignments.

F. Research Project Part 2: Outline

The student will complete a full sentence outline in preparation for Part 3 of the Research Project. The outline will include a thesis statement, the research question(s)/issues being answered/addressed, how much space will be allotted to each section of the paper, and a preliminary reference list of at least 15 sources. One member of the group will submit the final version of the Outline. The student is required to read all instructor feedback and implement it on future assignments.

Research Project Part 3: Final Document

Each group of students will be responsible for constructing and reviewing the final document. The student will work collaboratively on a 10–15-page paper in current APA format, complying with the formatting and content instructions. The topic of the paper will be selected by the group and will focus on a current issue concerning the use of health informatics in quality management and decision support within the healthcare industry. Each student must contribute weekly to the group's discussion in the Group Discussion Board Forum about this paper. One member of the group will submit the final version of this assignment.

Quizzes (6)

Each quiz will cover the Reading & Study material for the assigned modules/weeks. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 40 multiple-choice and/or multiple answer questions, and will have a time limit of 1 hour and 30 minutes.
