Course Description

This course examines key public policy and legal issues, trends and strategies related to the criminal justice context. Students will also examine and articulate recommendations for policy in this context and identify future legal challenges and issues.

Rationale

This course is designed to increase understanding about the impact of law and policy on the  criminal justice profession. The course provides students with an opportunity to draft a model policy proposal directly related to a current criminal justice problem while also examining the influence and potential impact of the Christian worldview.

Discussions

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each Discussion. Each thread must be 300–350 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 200–250 words.

Policy Proposal Assignments (7)

The student will create a public policy proposal that addresses a current criminal justice problem. The proposal will be completed utilizing a seven-part/seven-week drafting method beginning with the identification of a specific criminal justice problem and concluding with a proposed public policy or program solution. The student will write 2-4 page sub-part drafts weekly. The final cumulative policy proposal will be 14 to 28 pages, will include references to the course textbooks, and will incorporate the Christian worldview. Students will apply APA formatting.
