ENHS 411 Environmental Management

This course will provide a high-level overview of the critical history of some ecological environmental impacts in our world. Specific environmental disasters and crises will be discussed regarding the eventual development of U.S. Federal and Global Organizations which have promulgated the regulations and standards in place today. Responsible and successful environmental management practices, tactics and standards will be surveyed in detail, including the eventual development of the Global ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard. The student will learn best practice methods of efficiently and effectively managing hazardous wastes of all types. The course will provide an opportunity for the student to understand ways to synthesize a Biblical Worldview into environmental management.

This course is designed to help students understand the role of an environmental manager working with the public and private sectors to control adverse environmental conditions through the competencies of assessment, management, and communication. This course is required for students enrolled in the B.S. in Environmental Health and Safety online.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each Discussion. Each thread must be at least 300 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 150 words. For the thread, the student must support his or her assertions with at least 1 scholarly citation in current APA format. There is no need for citations for the peer replies unless necessary to support a point of discussion. Posts should meet all other writing and structure expectations in the assignment instructions.

The student will write a 4- to 5-page (not including the title and references pages) research-based paper in current APA format that develops a theory, based on scholarly information, of how a biblical worldview can impact effective environmental management practices. The body of the paper will address a general overview of the topic, differing views of biblical stewardship, a specific Christian example of environmental management, and the student’s personal stance. The paper must follow the outline provided in the assignment instructions with section headings. The paper must include at least 3 scholarly references in addition to the course textbook and the Bible in parenthetical and bibliographical citations. The assignment must meet all other writing and formatting expectations.

The student will prepare a 10–15-slide presentation based on their research of a selected public health topic provided by the instructor. There will be several assignments related to this project, due at various times throughout the course:

Annotated Bibliography and Thesis Statement

The student will choose a public health topic from a provided list and submit a definite, limiting thesis statement, along with an annotated bibliography in current APA format of at least 6 scholarly (and/or peer-reviewed) sources other than the textbook and the Bible that are relevant to the topic and no more than 5 years old. Each source will be followed by a short annotation describing key points pertinent to the student’s selected topic. Proper spelling and grammar must be used throughout.

Outline

The student will submit a detailed 2–3-page alphanumeric outline of the chosen research topic in current APA format. The outline must include full sentences and be double-spaced. The outline must include all of the following: a summary of the thesis statement, the topic background, key impacts to public health, environmental management efforts and impacts, and conclusions.

Final Presentation

The student will submit the final research presentation detailing their research on their public health topic. The presentation must be at least 10–15 slides in current APA format. A title slide and a reference slide must be included (not counted in length), and concise speaker notes for each slide should be provided. The presentation must include adequate font size, be visually appealing, and be based on at least 6 scholarly sources (not including textbooks or the Bible) that are strong, relevant, and no more than 5 years old from the Public Health and the Environment Project: Annotated Bibliography and Thesis Statement Assignment. The presentation must meet all other criteria listed in the assignment instructions.

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned module. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 16 multiple-choice questions, true/false, and essay questions, and have a time limit of 1 hour and 15 minutes. Each quiz allows 1 attempt.
