Course Description

Continuation of introduction for new PhD students, with emphasis on connecting theories of audience and consumer behavior, digital strategies, and media use to communication application.

Rationale

Building on the general knowledge of graduate research skills acquired in DIGI 700, the student will develop methodological research skills and become acquainted with major groups of communication theories. The student will apply both research skills and theoretical knowledge to the social media research.

Discussions (5)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each Discussion. For the initial thread for Discussion: Condensed Research Proposal Topic, the student will post a video no greater than 2 minutes in length in response to the introduction portion of the prompt, as well as a 400-500 word post discussing the student's summary of his/her Condensed Research Proposal Topic. The initial thread for the Discussion: Ten Communication Sources will also follow a 400-500 word length requirement (not to exceed 500 words). The thread for Discussion: Proposal Video must be a 5–7 minute video. There is no text-based component to this post. Threads for all other Discussions must be 400–450 words.

All discussions must demonstrate course-related knowledge and include at least 3 unique (different) scholarly sources in addition to the Littlejohn, Foss, and Oetzel course textbook. Textbook citations are not required for the Discussion Thread: Proposal Video, but the student must still use 3 unique scholarly sources for the video presentation. The student should verbally acknowledge each source used in the video's content and provide a citation to each source in the text of this discussion for the initial thread. All sources cited to provide scholarly support for the initial thread for all discussions in the course should come from the field of communication scholarship. 

Each thread should also integrate a biblical passage/Christian worldview. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads in 200-250 words per reply. Each reply must have at least 2 unique (different) scholarly sources per reply other than the textbook(s). All sources must be cited in current APA format. The student should be sure to review instructional information provided in Canvas specifically for the for the Discussion: Title, Abstract, Keywords, and Introduction and the Discussion: Ten Communication Sources for details regarding the unique requriements for those particular discussions.

Research Proposal Assignments (2)

Research Proposal: Literature Review Assignment

The student will write a condensed literature review in current APA format (which is one part of the final research proposal) on a topic in the research area of Communication Studies. The literature review must be 10-12 pages in length, include at least 15 primary, scholarly sources from the discipline of communication. Any sources the student opts to use in excess to these 15 sources are not required to be from the discipline of communication. The student should be sure to uses sources listed in the Communication Journals document provided as an assignment resource to compile his/her 15 scholarly references.

Research Proposal: Final Assignment

The student will write a condensed research proposal in current APA format on a topic in the area of Communication Studies. The proposal will include three (3) chapters: introduction, literature review, and research methods. The student should be sure to have revise his/her introduction and literature review based on feedback received from previous assignments. The completed proposal should be at least 20 pages in length (five pages for chapter one, ten to twelve pages for chapter two, and five pages for chapter three). The completed paper is to not exceed 25 pages in length. The condensed research proposal must include at least 25 references and at least 20 of the references should be scholarly, primary sources from the discipline of Communication Studies.

Quizzes (5)

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned modules: weeks. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes and contain 10 multiple-choice questions and allow for one attempt. The exception to this is the Quiz: One Communication Theory, which will contain 2 short answer questions and allow for unlimited attempts, with the highest attempt counting towards the student's grade. Each quiz will have a 1-hour time limit.

Quiz: Midterm

This quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned modules: weeks. The quiz will be open-book/open-notes and contain 30 multiple-choice questions. The Quiz: Midterm will have a 3-hour time limit and allow for one attempt.

Quiz: Final

This quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned modules: weeks. The quiz will be open-book/open-notes and contain 36 multiple-choice questions. The Quiz: Final will have a 3-hour time limit and allow for one attempt.
