CJUS 648 Management of Correctional Facilities

This course examines the options available to correctional facility managers and the impact of these various options and alternatives. Additionally, this course will focus on the role of the manager within the correctional setting and the various roles and responsibilities that a correctional facility manager might encounter such as staffing, health of inmates, security of the facility and the impact of public policy upon these facilities.

This course prepares managers, supervisors, correctional officers, law enforcement officers, and students into correctional leadership and management roles.  The students will analyze methods of recidivism reduction efforts in corrections. These methods of recidivism reduction include the analysis of correctional classification techniques. By the end of this course, students will compare and contrast differing stages for inmate management. These different stages of inmate management include the public fear of crime, the management of specialized offenders, and sentencing practices.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each Discussion. Each thread must be 600 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 300 words. Additionally, each thread and reply must reflect a solid Christian worldview through the use of at least 1 Holy Bible citation.

Leadership Paper Assignment

The student will write a 10-12 page leadership paper in current APA format that focuses on leadership (that summarizes, synthesizes, and then applies the role of a correctional administrator’s current issues relevant to a correctional facility). The leadership paper must include at least 10-12 references in addition to the course textbook and the Bible.

Research Paper Assignment

The student will write a 10-12 page research-based paper in current APA format that focuses on security in prisons (as a challenge to correctional administrators). The research paper must include at least 15 references in addition to the course textbook and the Bible.

Midterm Essay Assignment

The student will write a 8-10 page research-based paper in current APA format that focuses on managing offenders’ environments (selection of one chapter from chapters 10-11 from the required textbook). The midterm essay assignment must include at least 10-12 references in addition to the course textbook and the Bible.

Final Essay Assignment

The student will write a 8-10 page research-based paper in current APA format  that focuses on managing offenders’ programs or basic services in prisons (selection of one chapter from chapters 13-14 from the required textbook). The final essay assignment must include at least 10-12 references in addition to the course textbook and the Bible.

Quizzes (8)

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned Modules: Week. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 multiple-choice, 5 true/false, 2 essay questions, and have a 2 hours and 30 minutes time limit.
