Course Description

This course provides a summary of key leadership trends, best practices, controversies and debates, particularly as applied to the law enforcement context. Students will be challenged to research, synthesize and articulate leadership best practices as related to the administration of law enforcement members, groups and agencies.

Rationale

The purpose of this course is to identify the different styles of leadership within law enforcement. The student will also identify the qualities of a good law enforcement leader and the importance of team members.

Course Assignment

Textbook Readings and Lecture Presentations

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview. 

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide an initial post in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each post must be at least 400 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the initial post, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ initial post. Each reply must be at least 200 words. The student must apply a Christian worldview within the initial post and in the replies to classmates. The initial post must be supported by 2 scholarly sources. The replies must be supported by 1 scholarly source.

Leadership Worldview Paper: Initial Assignment

The student will write a 2–3-page (not to include the title, abstract, or reference pages) paper in current APA format that focuses on his or her worldview of law enforcement leadership. The paper must include reference(s) if the student states anything that is not his or her original thought or experience in addition to the Bible. The paper must have a Christian worldview.

Research Paper: Leadership Styles Assignment

The student will write a 8–10-page research paper (not to include the title, abstract, or reference pages) in current APA format that focuses on the different leadership styles. The paper must include 10 scholarly peer-reviewed sources in addition to the textbook, presentation, and the Holy Bible. The research paper must contain a Christian worldview as it pertains to leadership.

Write an 4–5-page paper (not to include the title, abstract, and reference pages) on the importance of motivation and the various ways to motivate team members. This research will require a minimum of 7 scholarly peer-reviewed journal articles in addition to the textbook, presentation, and the Holy Bible. The research paper must contain a Christian worldview.

The student will write a 4–5-page research paper (not to include the title, abstract, or reference pages) in current APA format that compares and contrasts leadership and management. This paper must include 7 scholarly peer-reviewed sources in addition to the textbook, presentation, and the Holy Bible. The paper must contain a Christian worldview is it pertains to the subject matter.

The students will write an 6–8-page book report (not to include the title, abstract, or reference pages) in current APA format on the book; The conviction to lead: 25 principles for leadership that matters. The only required reference for this assignment is the book itself. However, if you use any information other than the book, your thoughts, or your own experiences, you must cite the work. A Christian worldview is required.

The student will write a 3–4-page research paper (not to include the title, abstract, or reference pages) in current APA format that focuses on the qualities of a good law enforcement leader that you learned during this course. The paper must include 4 scholarly peer-reviewed references in addition to the textbook and Holy Bible. The paper must have a Christian worldview.
