Course Description

This course examines effective crisis intervention strategies for law enforcement agencies and helps inform students about the development of mental health community - law enforcement partnership teams throughout the United States. Students will not only gain theoretical knowledge about crisis intervention in law enforcement, but they will also gain practical skills in crisis intervention.

Rationale

This course is part of the Community Corrections, Restorative Justice, and Human Services cognate in the Bachelors of Science in Criminal Justice degree.  This course teaches students how to manage crisis situations encountered in the community and in jails/prisons.

Discussions (4)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to post a thread of at least 300 words. For each thread, the student must support their assertions with at least 2 citations in current APA format. Acceptable sources include peer-reviewed journal articles from Liberty University’s Online Library and other scholarly works to include volumes or books (as well as Scripture). The student must post 2 replies of at least 150 words each, incorporating at least 1 citation per reply.

Research Paper: Topic Proposal Assignment

The student will select a topic related to crisis intervention from topics not covered in the course textbook. The student must explain why he or she has chosen this topic in 1–2 sentences.

Research Paper: Outline and Bibliography Assignment

The student will provide an in-depth outline of his or her research paper. The outline must contain headings that correlate to the chosen topic.  A bibliography of containing at least 5 peer-reviewed journal articles that the student plans to use in the research paper must accompany the outline.

Journal Article Reviews (2)

The student will choose a peer-reviewed article on a crisis communication. The student will discuss the peer-reviewed article’s findings, any ethical dilemmas presented in the article, how the article relates to significant crisis issues, and how the topic relates to a biblical worldview, explaining how the concepts and ideas presented in the article apply to specific intervention issues. The student will complete a 2–3-page paper, which must include any appropriate reference(s) and a direct web link to the online article discussed. The student is required to have at least 1 peer-reviewed article less than 5 years old and at least 2 Bible verses as references in current APA format.

Quizzes (7)

Each Module: Week will have a quiz composed of questions based on the Learn items for the assigned Module: Week. Each quiz may include multiple-choice and essay questions. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes and have a 40-minute time limit. You may attempt each quiz up to two times. The highest score of your two attempts will be recorded.

Quiz: Final Exam

The Quiz: Final Exam will contain 40 multiple-choice questions.  The quiz will be cumulative and the questions will come from chapters covered in the course.  The final will be open-book/open-notes and have a 2-hour time limit.

Research Paper: Final Paper Assignment

The research paper will present a thesis, review of literature to support that thesis, a conclusion/recommendation to address the topic, and a Biblical perspective of the topic.  The paper must be 6-8 pages and written in current APA format with at least 8-10 references in addition to the course textbook and the Bible.
