Course Description

This course provides the student with a foundational knowledge of the legal issues that both start-up and established business enterprises face. Armed with this wisdom, the student will assess an organization's need for competent legal advice from an experienced professional in matters of contracts, corporations, employment, insurance, intellectual property, international trade, leases, limited liability organizations, partnerships, and homeland security concerns.

Rationale

The purpose of this course is to expose the student to a select group of legal issues faced by the typical business in today’s business environment. These issues include, but are not limited to, the following: the American legal system, business organizations, contracts, employment law, intellectual property law, and international law. Further, this course equips the student with the ability to analyze the types of legal issues pursuant to a Christian worldview.

Discussions (4)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the prompt for each assignment that contains at least 600 words, demonstrates course-related knowledge, and is supported by at least 2 scholarly sources other than the textbook/course materials. Each thread must also include Scripture, quoted and applied as an integral part of the discussion, in the context of a biblical worldview. In addition to the thread, the student will reply to 2 classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 300 words, supported by 2 scholarly sources other than the textbook/course materials. Each reply must also include at least 1 verse of Scripture applied to the discussion. Each source must be cited in-text and in a reference list in current APA format.

Commercial Lease Analysis Assignment

The student will respond to questions analyzing a commercial lease. The assignment must be at least 1,200 words and include at least 3 scholarly sources other than the course textbook/materials, and demonstrate Biblical worldview integration.

The student will read and analyze a scholarly source similar to those used throughout this course and the degree program. The student will annotate and comment on the source through Connect and create APA citations.

Analysis Assignments (4)

The student will complete four interactive application-based analyses in Connect, which will assess the student's understanding of key legal topics.

Paper Assignments (2)

The student will research a case study topic and write a critical analysis of at least 800 words, supported by at least 3 scholarly sources other than the course materials, cited in-text and in a reference list in current APA form. The analysis will also integrate Biblical worldview analysis.

Quizzes (4)

Each quiz will cover two module: weeks' assigned Read items. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 20 multiple-choice and true/false questions, and have a 1 hour time limit.
