Course Description

This course will provide students with an understanding of computer-based information systems and their role in modern global organizations and society as a whole. Topics will explore the capabilities and limitations of information systems based on their design and configurations. Databases will be a focus of this course, considering the central role they play in the information systems strategies of most organizations.

Rationale

This course provides an in-depth study of the application of decision support systems (DSS) and their underlying foundations in decision theory. It prepares professionals for the design, development, and application of systems that support business intelligence and other types of decisions.

Discussions (4)

There will be 4 Discussions throughout the course. The purpose of Discussions is to generate interaction among classmates in regards to relevant current course topics and to provide the student with a platform to present his/her research to an audience of his/her peers. The student is required to post 1 thread with a minimum of 1,000 words. The format of the thread must not be informal; rather, the format must be that of a research paper. Depth of analysis and comprehensiveness of your literature review are important factors. The student is also required to reply to 2 classmates’ threads with a minimum of 500 words. For each Discussion, the student must support his/her assertions in the thread with at least 5 citations in APA format. Each reply must cite at least 3 sources. Acceptable sources include the textbook, the Bible, additional required readings, and other peer-reviewed journal articles.

Course Project

The Course Project will entail 4 deliverables. The student will design a decision support system for a real-world user and present the system to the user in 4 phases.

Course Project: Data Collection Assignment

The student will interview a user and write a minimum of 500 words about the interview.

Course Project: Database Design Assignment

The student will design a database for the decision support system.

Course Project: User Interface and Prototype Assignment

The student will design the front end GUI, create a prototype of the system, and create a user manual.

Course Project: Decision Support System Delivery Assignment

The student will produce a functional support system for the user and write a reflection of the user’s overall impression of the system as well as suggestions for changes.

Quizzes (4)

The student will take 4 quizzes in this course. Each quiz will cover the materials presented in the textbook as well as the assigned articles. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 25 multiple-choice and true/false questions, and have a 60-minute time limit. Only 1 attempt will be allowed for each quiz.
