Airline Operations – AVIA 350

This course is representative of the initial training a First Officer will receive as a new hire in today’s airline industry. A foundational knowledge of FAR Part 91 instrument procedures is required. The material covered will focus on FAR Part 121 regulations, airline policies and procedures presented from an operational perspective. The topics studied will include: airline seniority, safety systems, the concept of operational control, operational policy, flight planning, and emergency/abnormal operations. Each student will be exposed to an in-depth study of dispatch procedures, fuel planning, weather requirements, and Jeppesen instrument approach procedures. The concepts of both Crew Resource Management (CRM) and Threat and Error Management (TEM) will be developed through all aspects of this course.
AVIA 310 and AVIA 320
The Airline Operations ground school course is designed to give students the necessary knowledge to meet the requirements of an initial airline “industrial” training course.
Measurable Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a strong foundational knowledge of FAR Part 91 instrument procedures.
- Apply FAA Airline Operations Specifications to airline operations.
- Correlate FAA weather requirements to airline operations.
- Interpret and operationally apply a Dispatch/Flight Release.
- Solve basic aircraft en route, descent, approach, and performance calculations.
- Communicate effectively in a multi-pilot/crew environment.

Course Requirements Checklist
After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1.
The student must submit a 2–3 minute video introduction. Specific elements described in the provided prompt must be included. This will be a graded assignment. The student must reply to at least 2 classmates’ introductions. Each reply must contain at least 50 words. (MLO: A, B, F)
Discussion Board Forum
Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each forum. Each thread must be 300–400 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 150 words. (MLO: A, B, F)
Interactive Study Activities (8)
Within each module/week’s Assignments folder, the student will find interactive study activities. These activities are to provide the student with an additional resource to help learn the material covered within this course. The interactive activities will be graded for completion. Each student is HIGHLY encouraged to view the material thoroughly to best prepare for weekly quizzes and course exams.
Reading and Study Summaries and KWL Chart Submissions (8)
The purpose of this assignment is to summarize material learned within the Reading & Study folder of each module/week. To assist in organizing the student’s thoughts, a KWL chart has been provided as a note-taking Template.
In addition to completing the KWL chart, the student must also provide a summary of what he or she learned during each module/week. At the bottom of the KWL chart, a summary box is provided for the student to summarize all concepts learned within the module/week. The summary must be in paragraph form with a minimum of 150 words.
Once the KWL chart is completed, the student must upload the summary each week to the provided submission link. The student must also answer specific questions regarding the KWL chart he or she has completed in the Reading & Study Summary quiz. (MLO: A, B, C, D, E, F)
The purpose of this assignment is to discuss and answer questions about 1 Nav and 2 Nav Alternate Filing Weather minimums to include applicable references from the FOM and appropriate Jeppesen charts.
The student must view the Capstone Project Video located in Module/Week 7 before beginning this project.
The visual presentation must include a 5-minute minimum-recorded Narrated PowerPoint presentation clearly answering all questions posed in the Capstone Project Overview Video in Module/Week 7. Within the presentation, the student must include and cite from the FOM and appropriate Jeppesen charts. (MLO: A, B, C, D, E, F)
Each quiz will cover the Reading & Study material for the assigned module/week. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain multiple variations of questions, and have a 45-minute time limit. (MLO: A, B, C, D, E, F)
Part 91 Exam
This exam will cover the Reading & Study material for the assigned module/week. The exam will be open-book/open-notes, contain multiple variations of questions, and have a 2-hour time limit. (MLO: A, B, C, D, E, F)
The Final Exam will cover the Reading & Study material for the entire course. The exam will be open-book/open-notes, contain multiple variations of questions, and have a 2-hour time limit. (MLO: A, B, C, D, E, F)
