SOWK 582 Generalist Social Work Macro Practice

Social Work Macro Practice is the study of practice in community and organizational settings from a generalist social work point of view. Students practice skills associated with engagement, assessment, intervention, and evaluation with communities and organizations.

Social workers interact within communities and organizations. This course aids the student in developing competency in the areas of engagement, assessment, intervention, and evaluation when working with communities and organizations. It prepares the student with foundational knowledge necessary for effective practice in macro settings.

Discussion

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will describe their community setting, including demographics: location, population, diversity of the population, and median income. The student will identify, from their lived experience or observations, a social justice issue they would like to further explore. This Discussion must also include the name and organization of a community leader, who works in the identified social justice area.

The student will create a thread of at least 350 words, then will reply to at least two peers to provide feedback and support. Each thread will have at least 150 words. The thread may use websites to support the community description. Replies in which the student is addressing a peers selected social justice topic must provide at least one scholarly citation in APA format to support their assertions. Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will explore the concept of Community Asset Mapping through the lens of Ecological Systems theory. The student will then create a thread of at least 350 words, then 150-word replies to at least two peers to provide feedback and support. For each thread, you must support your assertions with at least two scholarly citations and one biblical citation in the current APA format. Each reply must incorporate at least one scholarly citation and one biblical citation in the current APA format. Any sources cited must have been published within the last five years. The student will explore different types of evaluation methods for community events, select an appropriate assessment tool, and discuss strategies for sharing event outcomes with stakeholders.

The student will create a thread of at least 350 words, then 150-word replies to at least two peers to provide feedback and support. For each thread, you must support your assertions with at least two scholarly citations and one biblical citation in the current APA format. Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will create a professional PowerPoint presentation for their social justice community event and present it to the class as an initial thread in the discussion. The presentation will serve as an opportunity for the student to gain insights, feedback, and suggestions from peers regarding the strengths of the proposal and areas for consideration. The student is required to respond to two peers, with each response consisting of at least 150 words. Integrating biblical principles into both the thread and the peer responses is essential, understanding that integration goes beyond merely adding a biblical citation at the end of the thread. The student will view a social justice topic within their community from a strengths-based perspective. The student will identify the community assets that exist within their community and grade those assets on how they contribute to the social justice topic. The student will identify where these assets are located and then juxtapose those locations to the population that the social justice topic impacts. The student will discern if the identified population has access to these assets, as well as any other information about the population. The student will identify the strengths and areas of need within your community. The student will consider how to build upon the existing assets. And, finally, the student develops five key questions of a community leader who serves in the social justice area. The student will develop a comprehensive proposal for a community event based upon the identified social justice issue using the Community Asset Map Template and Community Leader Interview. This assignment will provide the student with practical experience in event planning and coordination, emphasizing the importance of collaboration, safety considerations, marketing strategies, budgeting, and day-of-event logistics. The student will engage in a self-reflective process regarding their skills in macrosocial work practice. The student will critically assess their own abilities, consider feedback received from both instructors and peers, and identify areas for professional development in the context of macrosocial work practice. This assignment will require at least two citations from peer-reviewed journal articles published within the last five years. This assignment must be at least 1,000 words in length. The student will complete a Quiz: Final Test that focuses on their macro level understanding throughout this course. The quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned modules: weeks.
