Discussion: Effective Communication
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to each provided prompt for the discussion. The student will choose a client case scenario from the provided options to utilize for their discussion. This client case scenario will also be utilized for additional assignments within the course. The student must list the chosen scenario and address the 3 provided prompts to receive full credit. Each prompt requires at least 1 reference to a concept from the textbook, cited in current APA format under a references section. Each prompt will require a different word count requirement: Prompt A (200-300 words), prompt B (250-350 words), and prompt C (200-300 words). The student must then reply to 2 classmates’ posts in 150-250 words each. Each reply should include 1 strategy the student would utilize if working with this client. At least 1 citation in current APA format, listed under a references section, is required per reply.
Skills Demonstration 1: Active Listening Session and Reflection Assignment
The student will conduct an active listening exercise with a colleague, friend, or family member (approx. 20 minutes) and complete the associated reflection assignment using the Skills Demonstration 1: Active Listening Session and Reflection Template. The assignment should consist of 3-4 pages of content, not including the references page, and at least 1 citation for the “12 Roadblocks to Communication” section. Both the student and the “client” must review and sign the Informed Consent Agreement form provided in the course. The signed form must be uploaded into Canvas along with the completed reflection. The assignment must follow current APA formatting.
Planning for an Initial Session Assignment
This assignment includes 2 aspects: internal preparation and external preparation. The student will use their selected client case scenario (same as the Discussion: Effective Communication client scenario) to address the required prompts on the Planning for an Initial Session Template and to complete the required HSER Brief Social History Intake Form. The first portion of the required template will relate to internal preparation. The student will provide 6 possible client thoughts/questions, 6 possible client feelings with an open-ended statement/question response, and an explanation of the goal/purpose of the initial session with support from at least 1 reference to a concept in the textbook listed under the references section of the template. The second portion of the template will relate to external preparation. The student will choose 3 categories from the provided list and will research and compile 6 agencies within their local community that are relevant to their client case scenario. Any sources utilized must be cited in current APA format. Both the Planning for an Initial Session Template and HSER Brief Social History Intake Form must be uploaded to Canvas.
Skills Demonstration 2: The Initial Session and Reflection Assignment
The student will complete the following as part of this assignment:
- A 10-15-minute recorded video of an in-person initial/intake session with a “client,” utilizing their previously chosen client case scenario from Discussion: Effective Communication. The student will fulfill the role of a case manager in this role-play session.
- Informed Consent Agreement form, signed by the student and the person acting as the “client.”
- Skills Demonstration 2: The Initial Session and Reflection Template
The video recording must be completed through Microsoft Teams. Both the student and the client must be fully visible in the video at all times. The student must ensure the audio and video are both clear. After completing the role-play session, the student will complete the Skills Demonstration 2: The Initial Session and Reflection Template. The student will provide at least 2 strengths and 2 areas of improvement for each area of the template: non-verbal communication (200-300 words, reflective and active listening (200-300 words), engagement (150-200 words), assessment (150-200 words), and demonstration of professional demeanor and values (200-300 words). Any sources used within the reflection must be cited in current APA format. All requirements components must be uploaded into Canvas to receive full credit.

Building on the HSER Brief Social History Intake Form and using the information gathered about the “client” in the Skills Demonstration 2: The Initial Session and Reflection Assignment role-play, the student will complete the Assessment of Strengths and Needs Template.
Case Conceptualization and Social History Assignment
For this assignment, the student will complete the Case Conceptualization and Social History Template based on their role-play session for Skills Demonstration 2: The Initial Session and Reflection Assignment. In the “Case Conceptualization (Brief Social History)” portion of the template, the student will analyze their previously recorded role-play session as a whole, completing a brief social history write-up for their client. This section will consist of 5 main areas: the presenting problem (50 words max), client background (100-150 words), initial impressions (150-250 words), assessment (150-250 words), and intervention (150-250 words).
