This course will expand the student’s knowledge and understanding of how sounds used in human languages are produced and how these sounds are systematically organized into patterns that obey very strict and specific rules, as well as how these patterns in all languages follow the same basic system. The student will observe in greater detail how stunningly organized and complex human language is, regarding the sound system alone, in addition to how the sound system relates to other levels of language structure. This understanding gives the student yet another glimpse into God’s vast intelligence and creativity.

In an effort to gain a more in-depth understanding of the concepts and theories of phonology covered in this course, students will select a topic to research with guidance from the instructor. The exploration of this topic will be conducted throughout the course in four stages: Topic Selection, Annotated Bibliography, Rough Draft, and Final Draft Assignments.

Summation Essay Assignment

In the Summation Essay Assignment, students will reflect on all that they have learned about phonology throughout the course. They will focus on key terms and explain how tone in languages is accounted for in phonology.
