HIST 419 Secondary Social Studies Teaching Methods
Course Description
A discipline specific social studies methods course with emphasis upon national and Virginia standards relating to the social studies. Content continues the development of lesson planning while adding specific discipline instructional strategies. Must be taken concurrently with HIST 420 – Secondary Social Studies Practicum.

Journal Article Critique Assignments (2)
Journal Article Critiques provide an opportunity for candidates to familiarize themselves with current research in the field of education. Therefore, the candidate is required analyze and critique a peer reviewed journal article from a professional journal. The article must address a topic within Social Studies Education. Each critique must be 2-3 pages. (LO’s 1, 2, 3, 4)
Wong Lesson Plan Assignment
Students will write a lesson plan designed for their very first day/week in the classroom; based from key lessons they learned from the Wong supplementary textbook readings. (LO’s 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)
Video Lesson Assignment
Students will record a Social Studies (secondary level) ‘practice’ lesson (Social Studies topic of their choice) for 18-21 minutes. Utilizing the provided Liberty University Lesson Plan Template is required for this task and the lesson plan must be uploaded into the assignment submission site in addition to a YouTube video or video link of the practice lesson. The lesson in which students will practice teach can be about an interesting historical event, a government class topic, an aspect of geography, an economics class topic, etc. The student will need to be creative not only in the development of this lesson, but how and where it will be taught and recorded. (LO’s 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)
Three Lesson Plans Assignment
Lesson planning is a key aspect of effective instruction. For this assignment, candidates will be writing three daily lesson plans for one grade level/subject in his/her endorsement area. All three lessons should be consecutive and build from one day to the next, focusing on a topic (of your choice) in a specific endorsement area (e.g., 9th grade US History, 10th civics, 11th grade economics). As these lessons are being developed, keep the Virginia SOLs in mind throughout the process. Make sure to use the Liberty University Lesson Plan Template for this assignment (LO’s 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7).
Quizzes (8)
Quizzes will cover the Learn material from within each module. These quizzes should only be taken when the student is prepared to complete them. The student may refer to their notes and textbook at any time during the assessment. The student will have 34 minutes to choose the correct answers to 14 multiple-choice and true/false questions. (LO’s 1, 2, 4, 5, 6)
