CLED 885 Praxis I: Planning & Design I

This course provides an introduction to action research and the dissertation-in-praxis research model. The student identifies a dissertation-worthy praxis problem related to the cognate field of study. The first chapter of the dissertation-in-praxis proposal is developed in this course.

This course is the first in a six-course sequence that leads to the development of the Dissertation-in-Praxis. In this course, the student will begin the process of creating the proposal. The student will write chapter one of a proposal for a program, process, or product applicable in a Christian leadership context. Chapter one presents the Praxis Problem and the organizational context in which the proposal will be implemented.

Discussion: What is a Dissertation-in-Praxis and what can I expect?

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. There is one discussion required in this course. After completing the reading and watch the videos requires, the student will post one thread of at least 300 words. The student must then post 2 replies of at least 150 words. For each thread and reply, the student must support his/her assertions with appropriate citations in APA format. Acceptable sources include the textbook, the Bible, scholarly works, and popular writings. (CLO: A)

The Dissertation-in-Praxis Verbiage Assignment

This assignment will allow the student to understand the definitions of those terms critical to the dissertation-in-praxis model. The student will also begin to think about his/her proposed praxis project and how he/she will identify and engage with the people and organization critical to his/her work. (CLO: A, B)

The doctoral candidate will write a section of chapter one of the Dissertation-in-Praxis Proposal. This section will briefly describe the problem or opportunity that motivates the proposal and the program, process, or product to be created in response to that problem or opportunity. The section will also briefly introduce the intended output and outcomes of the program, process, or product to be created. This section should be 2-3 pages (500-750 words) in length, follow current APA style requirements, and be compliant with any Program Handbook exceptions to those style requirements. (CLO: B, C)

The doctoral candidate will write a section of chapter one of the Dissertation-in-Praxis Proposal. This section will provide a rationale for undertaking this proposed project. This section should define present realities that mandate change and a preferred future for the organization or context in which the Dissertation-in-Praxis will be implemented. This section should be 3-5 pages (750-1250 words) in length, follow current APA style requirements, and be compliant with any Program Handbook exceptions to those style requirements. (CLO: B, C)

The doctoral candidate will write a section of chapter one of the Dissertation-in-Praxis Proposal. This section will address the preferred future to be created by the implementation of praxis program, process, or product. Five specific areas must be discussed, each under a subheading. These include a vision statement, purpose statement, objectives, outputs, and outcomes. This section should be 3-5 pages (750-1250 words) in length, follow current APA style requirements, and be compliant with any Program Handbook exceptions to those style requirements. (CLO: B, C)

The doctoral candidate will write a section of chapter one of the Dissertation-in-Praxis Proposal. This section will focus on the collaborating organization or the context in which the program, process, or product will be implemented. This section will provide a description of the organization or context and include any demographic information about the participants relevant to the proposal. This section should be 4-8 pages (1000-2000 words) in length, follow current APA style requirements, and be compliant with any Program Handbook exceptions to those style requirements. (CLO: B, C, D)

The doctoral candidate will write a section of chapter one of the Dissertation-in-Praxis Proposal. This section will describe the leadership of the organization, provide a description of the collaborating team, and identify a collaborating coach within the organization. This section should be 3-5 pages (750-1250 words) in length, follow current APA style requirements, and be compliant with any Program Handbook exceptions to those style requirements. (CLOs: B, C, D)

The doctoral candidate will assemble and submit the first draft of chapter one of the Dissertation-in-Praxis Proposal. This chapter include all of the required sections as identified in the assignment instructions. Chapter one must be a minimum of 15 pages in length, follow current APA style requirements, and be compliant with any Program Handbook exceptions to those style requirements. (CLO: A, B, C, D)

Quiz: Avoiding Plagiarism

This quiz will cover the subject of plagiarism. The quiz will be open-book/open-notes and contain 1 multiple-choice, 4 yes/no, and 15 true/false questions. The quiz allows 2 attempts with the highest attempt counting toward the grade and has a 1-hour time limit for each attempt.(CLO: A)
