AVIA 705 Advanced Aviation Research Orientation

This course will investigate and explore current research in the aviation discipline along with an in-depth overview of research methodologies. Students will learn the dissertation process and begin to explore aviation research topics of interest for dissertation development.

The dissertation journey begins with an understanding of the nature of research and research methods. While considering an issue or problem for research, students will also consider the various research methods that may be employed.


Textbook readings and lecture presentations

The candidate will complete assigned readings from course texts and course documents.

Video Discussion: Class Introductions

The student will complete the Video Discussion: Class Introductions in a visual presentation format. The visual presentation must include a 2-minute minimum recorded presentation. Be creative with the presentations. It is recommended that students use Kaltura to create the presentations. If a student is not comfortable with Kaltura, a technology medium must be used that allows the presentation to include the student’s face and audio. In addition to the initial video thread, the student must post 2 replies of at least 150-words. 

Discussions (2)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the candidate is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each thread. Each thread must be 500 words, incorporate at least 2 citations, and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the candidate is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 300 words and incorporate at least 1 citation. All posts must be in the current APA format and include citations and references. (CLO: A, C, D)

Aviation Problem Project Assignments (7)

The candidate will complete the 5-part Aviation Project Assignment Instructions to complete a cascading assignment building on content and research throughout the eight-week sub-term. The project will conclude with a final paper submission at the end of the course using content submissions during each week. 

Identify a Problem Assignment

The candidate will identify a significant problem in aviation. The candidate will then write a 750–1000-word paper explaining the problem, what led to the problem, the importance of the problem, steps that have been taken to address the problem, and a biblical worldview perspective. The candidate should cite at least 1 scholarly peer-reviewed source. The candidate should use current APA formatting throughout.

First Annotated Bibliography Assignment

Using the Aviation Problem Project Annotated Bibliography Template provided, the candidate will research the problem identified in the Identify a Problem Assignment and write original abstracts.  The candidate must not copy and paste the author’s provided abstract, but must write a unique original abstract summarizing 10 peer-reviewed articles published within the last 5 years.

Research Question and Outline Assignment 

Utilizing the provided Aviation Problem Project Outline Template, the candidate will compose a quality research question related to a specific aviation problem upon which he/she can build a Final Paper. The instructor will evaluate and comment on the candidate’s submitted question to help ensure its quality and usability. The candidate will also include an outline of their proposed course project final paper with this assignment. The candidate will write an outline with 3–5 major headings each with 2–5 subheadings of the primary themes or concepts that appear within and across the 10 articles used in the Annotated Bibliography. The outline must include current APA level 1 and level 2 headings.

Second Annotated Bibliography Assignment 

Using the Aviation Problem Project Annotated Bibliography Template provided, the candidate will research the problem identified in the Identify a Problem Assignment and write original abstracts. The candidate must not copy and paste the author’s provided abstract, but must write a unique original abstract summarizing 10 peer-reviewed articles published within the last 5 years. 

Draft Paper Assignment 

Utilizing feedback received from Parts 1-3, the candidate will create a 3,000-3,500 word draft of the final paper following the instructions for the Course Project: Final Paper. The draft will be submitted through Turnitin to enable the candidate to ensure all references are properly cited. Additionally, the candidate will receive instructor feedback on the draft that he/she can incorporate into the final paper. The paper must include a minimum of 20 scholarly sources, 12 of which must be current (within the past 5 years), and must be empirical, peer- reviewed journal articles or information from published scholarly books.

Third Annotated Bibliography Assignment 

Using the Aviation Problem Project Annotated Bibliography Template provided, the candidate will research the problem identified in the Identify a Problem Assignment and write original abstracts. The candidate must not copy and paste the author’s provided abstract, but must write a unique original abstract summarizing 10 peer-reviewed articles published within the last 5 years. Note: By this assigned module: week, the candidate will have accumulated 30 scholarly peer-reviewed articles to use in their final paper.

Final Paper Assignment 

Utilizing feedback received from Parts 1-4, the candidate will create a 3,000-3,500 word final paper. The final paper will be submitted through Turnitin to enable the candidate to ensure all references are properly cited. Additionally, the candidate will receive instructor feedback on the draft that he/she can incorporate into the final paper. The paper must include a minimum of 30 scholarly sources, 18 of which must be current (within the past 5 years), and must be empirical, peer-reviewed journal articles or information from published scholarly books.

Quizzes (2)

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the modules/weeks for which it is assigned. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 multiple choice questions, and have a 25 minute time limit.
