Department of Theatre Arts

About the Department:

The Department of Theatre Arts provides instruction in the theory and practice of theatre performance and production, in order to prepare students for professional stage careers, for graduate study in theatre arts, and for a life of growing appreciation for the theatre and dramatic art.

Central to the departmental purpose is the development of observant, sensitive theatrical artists, who with their skills, training, knowledge and professional attitudes may glorify Christ in the world through the practice of their craft and the testimony of their lives.

The Department of Theatre Arts offers three degrees:
B.A. in Theatre Arts Performance
B.A. in Theatre Arts Production
B.A. in Theatre Arts Education

Students entering into a course of study in Theatre Arts will first learn about the history of the Theater and begin to learn some of the basic acting techniques. During the course of the student’s four years at Liberty University he/she will learn character development, various acting techniques, and script analysis. Depending on the student’s course of study he/she will learn the knowledge, technique, and expressions related to his/her performance/production area. The student will also learn to express his/her thoughts in movement through theatrical conventions. The student will understand how Theatre Arts fits into a Christian world view and how it can be applied in a professional setting.

During the course of the student’s four years, there will be many opportunities to hone his/her area of expertise. 6-8 productions a year are produced in the 250 seat Lloyd Theater. LU is an active participant each year in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF), Virginia Theatre Association (VTA), and the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC).
