B.S. in Public Health Internship

HLTH 499: Professional Internship in Health Promotion

All students enrolled in the Public Health Major, Community Health Promotion Concentration or the prior Community Health Promotion Major, CHES Concentration must complete a 3-credit-hour internship in an approved organization or agency that will allow the student to fulfill three of the seven Areas of Responsibility for a Health Educator.

Public Health, Pre-Clinical Concentration students may choose between a 2-hour internship or a Senior Seminar (Research) class. The goal of the internship is to provide students the opportunity to use knowledge and skills acquired in the academic program under the direction and supervision of a preceptor/supervisor. The internship allows students to gain valuable experience as he or she prepares to enter the workforce upon graduation.

Students typically do their internship in the senior year. However, juniors who have completed all of the prerequisites may do their internship between their junior and senior year. Each credit hour of internship equals 60 hours of work at the internship site, meaning that for a 3-credit-hour internship a student must complete 180 work hours. For a 2-credit-hour internship, a student must complete 120 work hours.

Students are responsible for finding their own internship sites. The site must be approved by the Internship Advisor before a student is permitted to register for the Internship Class, HLTH 499.
