Dr. Piland received his B.S. in Athletic Training from Valdosta State University, his M.A. in Athletic Training from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and his Ph.D. in Exercise Science: Test and Measurement from the University of Georgia. He is Professor and Director of the School of Kinesiology and Nutrition at the University of Southern Mississippi.
Dr. Piland has been a Certified Athletic Trainer for nearly 25 years being clinically active for 10 years across a variety of job experiences. This is where Dr. Piland began his interest in the brain injury of concussion. Since 2003, Dr. Piland has worked with collaborative research groups to better understand the diagnosis, management, and prevention of this injury. Over the past 10 years, Dr. Piland has actively pursued a better understanding of this injury with a focus upon the causal mechanism of concussion and implementation and testing of sport protective equipment designs to mitigate this injury.
Dr. Piland Co-Directs a grant-funded lab which is fully equipped to assess the impact mechanics of blunt impact and has served on multiple occasions as a consultant towards the design and development of sporting goods equipment.
