Biography
Dr. Scott Connell currently serves as the Pastor of Worship at First Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida. Prior to this ministry assignment in Jacksonville, he served as an Associate Professor of Music and Worship Leadership at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary where he also was the Program Coordinator for the undergraduate music and worship program at Boyce College. He continues to serve as an adjunct professor at SBTS in addition to his responsibilities as an Online Professor of Worship, SME, and Program Director of the D.W.S. and Ph.D. programs at the Liberty University School of Music.
Dr. Connell’s previous academic studies include a B.S. in Music Education (instrumental and vocal certification) from Tennessee Tech University, an M.M. in Music Ministry (voice major) from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in Christian Worship from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. His areas of doctoral study included a dissertation on the history of theological application to worship practice in Baptist worship. He has published a book, Baptist and Worship: Sitting Beneath the Gospel’s Joyful Sound, based upon this study and has contributed chapters to two other works and numerous articles and papers on worship. He has taught coursework at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels and has supervised doctoral students in their final projects.
Dr. Connell has served churches in Tennessee, Texas, Maryland, Kentucky, and Indiana. He and his wife, Mary, have seven children.
