Navigating Handshake- How to Job Search by Location

Man looking down at a global map

One of the most powerful features of Handshake’s search engine is to focus your search by location. Handshake is an incredible platform that provides personalized opportunities to college students seeking jobs and internships. Here are some Handshake strategies to strengthen your next job search.

Find the Jobs Tab

To begin on a desktop, click on the “Jobs” page in the upper left corner. On a mobile device, select the Jobs tab on the bottom row. All job opportunities are displayed on the left side of the page. If you want to load a job’s full details, simply click on the listing to expand the information on the right side of the page.

Be sure to pay attention to key details about the role, such as the application deadline. Handshake allows you to save the job to a folder by clicking on the bookmark icon. Handshake will provide an automated reminder to apply prior to this deadline for additional help.

Narrow Your Search

Once you have located the Jobs page, you may refine your search results through several filtered options. Along the top of the page, you will see 6 search options: Location, Full-time Job, Internship, Part-time, On-campus, and All filters. These tabs allow you to identify the most relevant jobs for your current career needs.

To focus your search by city, state, or zip code, click the “Location” tab. The Location filter has a default radius of 50 miles, but this can be altered. You may now search directly for jobs within your desired location.

The best part about a filtered search is that Handshake allows you to combine multiple filters for the most effective process. By selecting “All Filters” you can add multiple search criteria. For example, your job search can be a Work Study position in Lynchburg, with vital industry experience and recommended by your university. Navigating Handshake with specific searches allows for students to craft intentional job and internship goals for career success.
