The College Composition CLEP test includes an essay component that is scored.  It takes 4-5 weeks for results to be sent to both Liberty and the student. 

The College Composition Modular CLEP test does not include an essay component, and as a result is scored immediately and can be seen by the student at the end of his or her exam. However, this exam requires a score of 60 to pass, whereas the College Composition exam requires a score of 50. The higher score is a Liberty specific requirement and must be obtained in order earn credit for ENGL 101.

Excelsior College exams are approved for credit in the Liberty University Online program. Undergraduate college credit may be earned through Excelsior College Exams. Liberty University Resident Program-Institutional Challenge Examinations (ICE)

To apply for credit by examination, students must submit an ICE Request Form to the Academic Success Center, Testing Services. The form should be taken to the Academic Success Center, Testing Services in person. A $130 ICE exam fee will be charged on the day of the test. Please contact ttc@liberty.edu with any questions. Additionally, such requests are subject to the following guidelines:

  1. The minimum passing score for both upper and lower level undergraduate courses is 70%. An exception to this policy may occur if a professional, state, or national organization specifies a higher score for recognition.
  2. A maximum of 30 hours of ICE credits will be accepted toward an undergraduate degree; the number of credits that may be applied toward each major may vary.
  3. Students may not take the ICE if the course has previously been taken or is currently being taken.
  4. ICE may be taken during the drop/add period.
  5. ICE tests can only be taken with permission after classes begin, during the student’s final semester.
  6. ICE credits may not be applied toward residency hours.

Liberty University Online-Institutional Challenge Examinations (ICE)

To apply for credit by examination, students must submit an ICE Request Form via their Liberty University webmail to the ICE Coordinator at LUOICE@liberty.edu. The ICE Request Form can be located on the Liberty University Online ICE website: http://www.luonline.com/index.cfm?pid=14243. A non-refundable registration fee of $50 will be charged for each ICE registration. A $45 passing fee will only be applied if a student should pass the exam. Such requests are subject to the following guidelines:

  1. The use of notes, books, websites, and other materials is prohibited while taking the exam.
  2. The minimum passing score for the undergraduate level courses is 70%.
  3. Each exam has 100 questions.
  4. A maximum of 30 hours of ICE credits will be accepted toward an undergraduate degree; the number of credits that may be applied toward each major may vary.
  5. Students may not take the ICE if the course has previously been taken or is currently being taken.
  6. ICE credits may not be applied toward minimum hours required through Liberty University.
  7. Each exam will be available for 30 days after registering for it. After the deadline, it cannot be accessed.

ICE  (Institutional Challenge Examination)

What is an ICE?

An ICE is a Liberty University exam for residential students created from our courses and developed by our faculty.


Registration Procedures

  1. Print the ICE Registration Form.
  2. Student must receive permission from the designated course supervisor before registering for an ICE. Supervisor will sign the ICE Registration Form if approved. The designated course supervisor for the BIBL/EVAN/THEO exams is Dr. Etzel in the Religion Hall. For all other exams, please go to the chair of the ICE's respective department for the appropriate signature.
  3. Student returns registration form to Testing Services, Religion Hall 119 when he/she is ready to take the exam.
  4. Student must pay for the ICE before taking the exam by using the Testing Services Payment Portal

Passing Score

Passing score is 70% for undergraduate and 76% for graduate courses.


Restrictions

The credit granted may only be used at Liberty University. 

A maximum of 30 hours may be used for undergraduate and 14 hours for graduate.

  • $50 registration fee
  • $80 test administration fee
  • Total cost: $130

Rules for the ICE

  • You may only take the ICE once
  • An ICE may not be taken if you have previously taken the course or are currently taking it
  • The ICE may be taken during the add/drop period
  • You cannot take the ICE after classes begin during the graduation semester
  • An ICE must be completed within one month of notification of the exam
  • Credits for an ICE are not applicable to residency hours

University of Cambridge International Exams

Liberty University accepts AS-level and A-level University of Cambridge International Exams (CIEs) with grades A-C.

All AS-level CIEs will be awarded only three credit hours of elective credit (ex. 1XX, 3XX).

To receive official credit,  students must request an official score report certificate directly from Cambridge International Examinations and have this sent to John Coles-Director of Transfer Evaluations in the Registrar's Office.  Credit will not be considered based on a high school transcript. 

Students may also present the original score report certificate to Mr. Coles, in-person (preferred). 

 

DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSSTs)

Undergraduate college credit may be earned through the DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSSTs) program.  These tests are administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS) and are available to both military personnel and civilians.
