As an international student, one of the most important aspects of your education is maintaining your F-1 status to be in compliance with federal regulations. The information below explains how to maintain your full-time enrollment and F-1 status.

Closely following these requirements will allow you to enjoy your time at Liberty and focus on your education!

As a condition of your F-1 student status, you must be enrolled full-time each fall and spring semester based on the degree level you are pursuing.

  • Undergraduate: 12 credit hours
  • Graduate: 9 credit hours
  • Doctorate: 6 credit hours

Please keep in mind the following requirements to keep your F-1 status:

  • You must have permission in advance from the International Student Center to drop below full-time enrollment for any reason. Failure to gain approval will cause you to fall out of status, and your I-20 will be terminated.
  • You may not withdraw from classes placing you below full-time even after the Add/Drop Period.
  • Failing to attend class may cause professors to either drop you from the class or give you an ‘FN’, which is a University Withdrawal. If you receive an FN that puts you below full time, your status will be in jeopardy of being terminated.
  • You are not required to be enrolled during the summer term.
  • You may enroll for less than full-time during your final semester in a degree program only after completing a request form and receiving approval from the DSO prior to the beginning of your final semester.

Only one (1) online class may be counted towards your full-time load during the fall and spring semesters. However, once your full-time load requirement is met for a given semester, you may take as many online courses as you wish.

  • Undergraduate students may take 9 residential credits and 3 or more credits online
  • Graduate students may take 6 residential and 3 or more credits online
  • Doctoral students may take 3 residential and 3 or more credits online
