Program Expectations & Advising Resources for the Ed.D. in Curriculum & Instruction

Non-Licensure

The Doctor of Education program prepares candidates to be competent, effective leaders with a Christian worldview who will model high standards and assume a leadership role in the field of education. Leaders in the field of education are seen as those who assume a facilitating role in accomplishing the goals and objectives of an education system, whether it be as a teacher, superintendent, principal, curriculum director, instructional supervisor, or university administrator.

For candidates on the 2018-19 and earlier Degree Completion Plans, the Ed.D. is a sixty-hour program, and culminates in a dissertation. For candidates on the 2019-20 and later Degree Completion Plans, the Ed.D. is a fifty-four hour program, and culminates in a capstone project.

This is a non-licensure program.


Requirements (2019-20 and Later Degree Completion Plans)

  • General Information
    • EDUC 880 must be the final non-capstone course taken.
    • Field Experiences: Elective courses and optional licensure courses may require field experiences.
    • 3.0 GPA
  • Capstone Information
    • All non-capstone coursework must be completed before starting EDUC 880.
    • Starting with EDUC 880, candidates must continuously enroll in capstone coursework until the final defense. Candidates who break enrollment will be required to re-apply.
    • Ed.D. students are allowed to enroll in EDUC 887, 888, 889 a maximum of two times. Extensions for exceptional circumstances must be approved by the School of Education.
    • Enrollment in EDUC 890 is contingent on School of Education approval.

Requirements (2018-19 and Earlier Degree Completion Plans)

  • General Information
    • EDUC 919 must be the final non-dissertation course taken.
    • 3.0 GPA
  • Dissertation Information
    • All non-dissertation coursework must be completed before starting EDUC 980.
    • Starting with EDUC 980, candidates must continuously enroll in dissertation coursework until the final defense. Candidates who break enrollment will be required to re-apply.
    • Any candidate who is not ready for enrollment in EDUC 990: Dissertation Defense after completing the prerequisite dissertation courses may be required, as determined by the candidate’s dissertation chair, to repeat EDUC 989 until deemed ready for enrollment in EDUC 990.
    • Candidates must defend the dissertation proposal within the first three attempts of EDUC 988. Candidates must defend the dissertation within six attempts of EDUC 989.

Licensure Information

Candidates on a 2019-20 or previous Degree Completion Plan may pursue an optional licensure endorsement by following the requirements on the final page of the Degree Completion Plan. Requirements for licensure include additional courses, exams, and other state-approved requirements.


Transfer Credit

View the doctoral transfer policies. Capstone and Dissertation courses are not eligible to be transferred.
