Our online Bachelor’s in Social Work degree requires a 3-credit hour one week intensive, SOWK 355: Social Work Practice with Groups. While you may have the opportunity to take additional courses as intensives, this is the only one that is required. Intensive courses allow you to build relationships with your classmates and engage with Liberty faculty and staff on a deeper level. We are excited for you to participate in this engaging and edifying class!

What Are Intensives?

Our Intensives are classes* where students can interact with their peers and professors in a residential or virtual classroom setting for one week as part of the course. These courses allow students to interact and learn from professors face-to-face and enhance their education through a higher level of engagement.

While the intensive course* runs the full 8-weeks, only one week of that requires live instruction, in either the residential or virtual classroom format. Attendance for the full five days is required for passing this course. This policy is non-negotiable because of the short amount of time we have together.

As you prepare, please note that this is a highly interactive course in which you will be practicing the skills necessary for facilitating groups. Therefore, your full participation will be essential, including some weeknight work during the intensive week. It is not a “conference” type of course that might offer the flexibility to step in and out of lecture presentations. We realize this is a heavy schedule, but it is required to complete all the necessary components for the 3-credit practice course in this one-week timeframe.

Many students have felt a deeper connection to Liberty University, their peers, and their passion for the social work field after they have attended the intensive. We are confident that your academic journey will be enhanced by this experience!

* Pre-work and/or post-work will be required as a part of this course.

Pre-Work and Post-Work

Course access for intensives will be based upon the start date of the semester in which the intensive is being offered. Students are responsible for completing any pre-work prior to the first day of class.
After attending the one-week intensive, students will have the rest of the term to complete the remaining course work.

Registration & Cancellation

Students must register for their intensive by the start of the A term for that semester or 30 days before the first day on campus (if attending an on-campus section), whichever comes first.
Occasionally, low enrollment may cause some intensives to be cancelled.
The online Intensive Course Schedule will be updated weekly concerning course closings and/or cancellations. Check this periodically before the start of your course to minimize potential problems.

Attendance

The intensive will take place on Microsoft Teams. This app is free to use and download for Liberty students. Click here to download this app prior to the start of the intensive.
- We recommend downloading the desktop version and using a computer/laptop during the intensive as the web and app versions do not have all the same functionality.
Attendance for the full five days is required for passing this course. This policy is non-negotiable because of the short amount of time we have together.
Please ensure that you have made proper arrangements with your work, family, and other responsibilities for this week. This course requires your undivided attention.

Orientation

Once you have registered for a section of this course, you will receive an email regarding an orientation meeting which is required for all students attending the intensive. This meeting will be scheduled to take place in advance of the weeklong intensive, and will provide helpful information and tips for how you can make the most of your intensive!

Dress Code

Liberty University policy is to dress modestly and appropriately at all times. While this intensive will be taking place virtually, it is expected that you maintain proper dress code standards.

Preparing for the Intensive

Ensure that your computer camera and microphone are working properly.
Ensure strong internet connectivity.
A headset or headphones will be required to reduce background noise and protect confidentiality.
Secure a private meeting space.
Make dedicated childcare arrangements. Please note: Group work will take place in the evening hours during the week of the intensive as well.
Plan easy snacks and meals for the scheduled breaks.
