  Practicum Experiences Practicum students at Northland Counseling Services participate in individual, group and family therapy settings. Co-therapy experience with our intensive outpatient treatment program (IOP) is highly encouraged. Opportunities for co-occurring disorders IOP and residential treatment are also available. Students are expected to carry an individual, family therapy, and group caseload. After initial orientations and training, students have 10 or more client contact hours per week. As you will be receiving academic credit for this position, you will not be paid. Therapy Opportunities A variety of therapy experiences are available depending on the practicum student’s goals and experience. Practicum students function as team members where they train, co-facilitate groups, attend team meetings, develop treatment plans, review testing results, write progress notes, and complete assessments and evaluations. Practicum students are also able to see clients from diverse cultural backgrounds. Therapeutic modalities include cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and solution-focused therapies. IOP and Residential Settings Bridges at Stone Creek is an IOP that provides treatment and support for those with serious or critical mental health issues. Bridges helps our clients regain stability and develop skills to better navigate the journey in life that lies ahead. Practicum students will gain therapeutic experience working with individuals with severe and persistent mental illness. These patients often are coming from a hospital setting or trying to prevent hospitalization. Practicum students will receive intensive training in CBT for depression and anxiety and will have the opportunity to participate in weekly psychiatric supervision meetings. Northland and its partners also offer intensive outpatient and residential treatment programs for co-occurring disorders. Students have an opportunity to work with patients who have both mental illness and chemical dependency problems. Supervisors for these programs are dually licensed. Training Goals Develop skills in clinical assessment, diagnosis, and formulation of case dynamics. Develop skills in establishing therapeutic rapport, cultural competence and the ability to communicate information clearly and sensitively to clients and staff. Develop the ability to work collaboratively with other professionals on staff and in the community. Develop skills in understanding relevant ethical, legal, and professional standards in clinical work. STS VA provides services to convicted adult sex offenders who have been placed on community probation. The primary form of treatment is group therapy, although there is some opportunity for individual and family sessions.
