Emergency Preparedness for International Students

Although we pray that there will never be a natural or man-made disaster at Liberty University, being prepared for any potential disasters is of the utmost importance. As an International Student inside the U.S., you are required to keep in contact with the International Student Center (ISC) during an emergency. Please see below for important guidelines and reminders regarding emergency notifications, precautions, and what to do in case of an emergency.

Go to COVID-19: International Student Center Updates to access recent ISC updates regarding the Coronavirus situation.

Emergency Notifications

During an emergency, you will be notified by:

  • The outdoor sirens of the Liberty University Emergency Warning System
  • Announcement on your MyLU page
  • Mass email to all Liberty University email addresses
  • Announcement on WRVL Radio 88.3 FM
  • Campus Alert System – You must sign up in order to receive alerts.

Precautions

Make the following precautions in preparation for any emergency:

  • Keep travel documents in a secure place
  • Set up a FERPA pin so your parents can contact Liberty on your behalf
  • Keep your contact information up to date
  • Sign up for the campus alert system

During an Emergency

In the event of an emergency, follow these guidelines:

  • If living off-campus, international students and their accompanying dependents (if any), should follow the instructions of state and local officials, including any instructions to shelter in place or evacuate. All international students living on campus should follow the Liberty University emergency plan.
  • If students have been ordered to evacuate, they should not return until they are told by local officials that it is safe to do so.
  • International students must remain in contact with the International Student Center (ISC), and inform the ISC of their emergency plans, including whether they have been ordered to evacuate.
  • Staying safe is paramount, however, international students must also do their best to take all necessary actions to maintain their student status.
  • Under the circumstances, international students may not be able to stay in status and may require reinstatement. Their International Student Advisor (ISA) will help them with this, but it is essential that they keep necessary non-immigrant documents in a safe, secure place and take these documents with them if ordered to evacuate.
  • Before leaving, if possible, international students should communicate with the ISC about their emergency plans.
  • If documents are destroyed or lost, contact the local embassy or consulate and ISC as soon as possible.
  • International Students are required, per federal regulations, to keep in contact with the International Student Center (ISC) in the event of an emergency. Contact the ISC via email at mystatus@liberty.edu, phone (434) 592-6486, or Facebook @LUInternationalStudents.
