COUC 998 Practicum

Application Deadlines

 Deadlines are non-negotiable.

The Spring 2019 deadline has passed (Nov. 5, 2018)

Upcoming Practicum application deadlines:

  • Summer 2019: February 18, 2019
  • Fall 2019: June 17, 2019
  • Spring 2020: November 4, 2019 

  • Prerequisites
    • Must have 3.0 cumulative GPA or above by the posted application deadline
    • Complete Prerequisites:
      • Advanced Theory Application (COUC 715)
      • Advanced Research Design (COUC 740)
      • Ph.D. Qualifying Exam (COUC 969)
        • All prerequisite courses are non-negotiable and must be successfully completed prior to the start of the Practicum.
  • Hour and Semester Requirements

    Practicum (COUC 998)

    Minimum Practicum Hours 100:

    • Direct Client Contact: 40 hours required
    • Individual Supervision Hours: 1 hour required each week (15 hours minimum) 
    • Faculty Group Supervision: 1.5 hours required each week (15 hours minimum)

    Semester Requirements: 

    • Internship officially starts the first day of Liberty’s academic semester.
    • Internship is full-semester commitment.
      • Students are required to earn hours each week of the semester with the approved site and supervisor.
    • Internship is an A-Term Course:
      • 16-17 weeks during the Fall and Spring semesters
      • 14-15 weeks during the Summer semester.
  • Practicum Sites

    Types of sites that can typically be approved for practicum fieldwork:

    • Counseling agency
    • Hospital
    • Private practice
    • University counseling center
    • Community services board
    • School*
    • Church**

    *A potential school site must provide mental health services to elementary, middle, and/or high school-aged students. The site must use approved informed consent and maintain records of counseling sessions.

    **A potential church site must be an established church counseling center or services that use approved informed consent and maintains client records of counseling sessions.

    Traditional site: A site offering traditional counseling services which address general population counseling needs of individuals, couples, and families. A traditional site is one which is not limited in its scope of practice to a counseling specialization requiring certification standards. 

    Disclaimer: For students who own their own private practice, we do not approve non-traditional counseling services (i.e. intensives, adventure, equestrian, alternative therapies, etc.)

  • Supervisor Information

    Students are allowed a maximum of two supervisors. Discuss the supervisor responsibility list with potential supervisors.

    • On-Site Supervisor: an individual who is an employed counselor at the site you are applying to complete your Internship at.
    • Off-Site Supervisor: an individual who is not an employed counselor at the site you are applying to complete your Internship at, but has received approval to come on site and provide supervision.

     

    Examples of Approved Supervisors

    • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision (from an accredited university)
    • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
    • Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)
    • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
    • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
    • Licensed Psychologist (LP) – a Psychologist that preferably, earned a doctoral degree in Psychology (Psy. D.)
      • All others are reviewed on a case by case by the Practicum/Internship Office
    • Psychiatrist

    Examples of Supervisors Not Approved

    • Doctorate degrees that are not in the counseling field or are unaccredited
    • Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) 
    • Limited Licensed Professional Counselor (LLPC)
    • Master of Divinity
    • Pastoral Counselors
    • School Counselors
    • Supervisors who are not licensed in the same state as the practicum site.
  • Application Documents

    Practicum (COUC 998): Practicum Application Process

    1. Degree Completion Plan Audit
      • Located under Student Tab in ASIST
    2. CastleBranch Background Check Receipt
    3. Student Verification Form
    4. Supervisor's License Verification
      • Found on your state counseling board website.
      • Includes name, license number, issue date, expiration date, & current/active
    5. Fieldwork Contract
      • On-site Fieldwork Contract
        •  Onsite supervisor: an individual who is an employed counselor at the site you are applying to complete your Practicum at.
      • Off-site Fieldwork Contract
        • Offsite Supervisor: an individual who is not an employed counselor at the site you are applying to complete your Practicum at, but has received approval to come on site and provide supervision.
      • Signed by student and site supervisor 
        • The dates must match Libert's A-term semester dates. Check the Academic Calendar for the semester dates.
    6.  Site & Supervisor Information Forms
      • Signed by the site director, supervisor, and student
    7. Digital Photo of Student
      • Professional photo, driver's license, or student ID
    8. Liability Insurance Face Sheet
      • Students are required to purchase their own coverage for the duration of Practicum and Internship.

    9. Affiliation Agreement
      • Extensions will not be granted for Affiliation Agreement negotiations.
      • Cover Page: Completed by site representative
      • Agreement: Completed and signed only by legal signatory at site
      • Schedule A (Student Addendum): Completed and signed by student
        • Review guidelines and instructions

    Important:

    • The Practicum and Internship Office does not accept electronic signatures on any approval documents, other than the Affiliation Agreement.
    • The informed consent and how the site maintains records will need to be submitted with a copy of the Fieldwork Contract for potential school or church sites.
    • All approval documents must be submitted to the Practicum Office through the SharePoint submission portal prior to the deadline listed above. No late documents will be accepted. Submission of the below forms does not mean automatic acceptance of the proposed site and/or supervisor; they must be approved first. Liberty University must validate that the student's proposed site will provide a good educational experience and that it has adequate oversight and safeguards built in to ensure an appropriate clinical environment.
  • Document Submission

    All approval documents must be submitted to the Ph.D. Practicum Office through the SharePoint submission portal prior to the deadline listed above. No late documents will be accepted without the permission of the Director of Clinical Training. Submission of the below forms does not mean automatic acceptance of the proposed site and/or supervisor; they must be approved first. Liberty University must validate that the student's proposed site will provide a good educational experience and that it has adequate oversight and safeguards built in to ensure an appropriate clinical environment.

    Due to the potential time required in locating a site and supervisor, students are encouraged to begin looking for a site and supervisor three to four months prior to the application submission deadline set by the Practicum/Internship Office.

    Submit all the required approval paperwork through the online submission portal by the application deadline.

    After your documents have been approved, you will receive an official approval email with your approved start date for earning hours. Upon approval, the Ph.D. Practicum Office will manually register you for the course.

    Students will submit three different time preferences for WebEx Faculty Group Supervision. This is an initial inquiry as to time availability. Our office cannot guarantee a specific day and time WebEx Faculty Group Supervision. Class will be held at a mutually agreeable time as determined by the professor. 

  • Changing Site and/or Supervisor

    Students are allowed to switch site(s) and supervisor(s), add an additional site or supervisor or drop a site or supervisor during their Practicum experience. 

    Disclaimer: If there is a change in the Site Director that is listed on the Site Information Form, our office will only need an updated Site Information Form with the new individual’s name and title. You will need to submit the updated Site Information Form via email to phdpracticum@liberty.edu.
