Liberty University Teaching Awards

Teacher Appreciation Grams (TAGs) 

Once a year, students are given a special opportunity to recognize faculty’s dedication and hard work via Teacher Appreciation Grams. This residential, campus-wide campaign inspires students to send a message of encouragement to their professors. The Center for Teaching Excellence gathers the messages and distributes hard copies as traditional-looking telegrams to the professor recipients – thank you for all you do!

The President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (PAET)

The award is recognized as the university’s most prestigious annual academic honor. Its purpose is to celebrate teachers who have promoted significant student learning- evidenced by creative and innovative approaches to teaching, the effective use of instructional technology, and exceptional pedagogical skill. Additionally, the recipients’ impact on student faith, thought, and character fully realizes Dr. Falwell’s vision of Training Champions for Christ. The award process involves a formal nomination, dean support, faculty input, and student contribution. The Center for Teaching Excellence oversees the adjudication and process. Winners are recommended by confidential Provost Scoring Committees, comprised of select staff, faculty, academic leadership, and past winners, and are affirmed by the Office of the Provost.

CTE Director’s Award for New Faculty Mentoring (NFM Award)

In order to recognize seasoned faculty mentors’ extraordinary dedication to supporting newly onboarded colleagues, up to three veteran mentors participating in the Koinonia Mentoring Program of first-year, full-time faculty will be recognized with an award as New Faculty Mentors of the year. Mentors meet monthly with their mentees, offering advice, support, and encouragement to new faculty members. NFM recipients are selected based on length of service and determined by a scoring committee. 

CTE Faculty Fellow Program

As part of its commitment to best practices, the Center for Teaching Excellence seeks Faculty Fellows to draw upon their talents. Many CTE Faculty Fellows are past winners of the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. The CTE Faculty Fellow role is an opportunity for distinguished faculty to become featured speakers at CTE’s January Conference and during semester workshops. Additionally, Faculty Fellows are recognized at various events throughout the academic year. This program involves a competitive application process.

Meet our 2025-26 Faculty Fellow

Dr. Sherri Walker
PMHNP/DNP Program Director
Associate Professor of Nursing

Dr. Sherri Walker serves as the Program Director for the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs at Liberty University, where she is also an Associate Professor of Nursing. Since joining the university in 2019, Dr. Walker has held a variety of roles, including online adjunct faculty, practicum field director, Instructional Mentor, and Subject Matter Expert, each reflecting her unwavering commitment to student-centered education, academic excellence, and holistic care. In recognition of her outstanding contributions, Dr. Walker was honored as a 2024–25 President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching recipient

Dr. Walker integrates faith, wellness, and extensive clinical experience to teach with clarity, compassion, and excellence. Students praise her accessible instruction, rich clinical wisdom, and supportive mentorship. Grounded in Psalm 46:10, she fosters community and prepares nurse practitioners with Christ-centered purpose and professional competence. We are honored to have Dr. Sherri Walker as our 2025-26 CTE Faculty Fellow.

Dr. Andrea Smith
Online Chair, Associate Professor
School of Aeronautics

Dr. Andrea Smith was a 2024 recipient of the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Having earned a master’s in both Education and Aeronautics and a doctorate in Instructional Design and Technology, Dr. Smith serves as an associate professor and the online chair for Liberty University’s School of Aeronautics. Additionally, Dr. Smith acts as both a Dissertation Chair and Committee Member for the School of Education .Heavily invested in advancing technology for her school, Dr. Smith leads the way in integrating emerging technologies into course design and curriculum development. Her efforts to innovate and motivate peers to create rich student experiences highlights her dedication to Liberty’s mission of Training Champions for Christ. We are honored to have Dr. Andrea Smith as our 2024-25 CTE Faculty Fellow.

2023-24

Dr. David Schweitzer
Professor, Mathematics
College of Arts & Sciences

David Schweitzer was a 2023 recipient of the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and a 2020 recipient of the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Research Mentorship.

Holding a Master’s in Mathematics from the University of Houston and a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Lehigh University, he serves as a Professor of Mathematics in the College of Arts and Sciences and as an Adjunct Professor in the School of Engineering. Schweitzer is invested in the integration of math and technology, developing software tools to aid mathematical expression in various learning environments. He is the Program Director for Liberty’s Applied Mathematics and Statistics Degree, where he develops curriculum and serves as an advisor to the Actuarial Club, actively contributing to and managing the club’s resources.

Dr. Brad Burgess
Associate Professor, Department Chair
College of Applied Studies and Academic Success

Brad Burgess serves as the Department Chair for the College of Applied Studies and Academic Success (CASAS). He holds a Master of Arts in Religion from Liberty University, a Master of Business Administration from Liberty University, and a Doctor of Education from Grand Canyon University.

He currently works on the Faculty Hiring Committee, the Faculty Senate, and the Undergraduate Administrative and Curriculum Committee (UACC). In addition, he is the co-advisor for Omega Nu Lambda National Honor Society. He has been a part of Liberty for 19 years. We are honored to have Dr. Burgess as our 2023-24 CTE Faculty Fellow.

2022-23

Dr. Travis Holt
Assistant Professor of English
College of Arts and Sciences

Travis Holt was a 2021 recipient of the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. He earned his Ph.D. in English from Old Dominion University in 2022. He has served as an Assistant Professor of English in the College of Arts and Sciences since 2014.

During this time, Holt has developed several courses, both on the undergraduate and graduate levels, including Basic Writing, Composition and Rhetoric, Classic Rhetoric, and Modern Rhetoric. He is the primary instructor for ENGL 101. Holt also serves as the Faculty Athletics Representative.

2021-22

Dr. Stephen Bell
Professor of English
College of Arts and Sciences

Dr. Stephen Bell served as an officer in the Army for four years after college and taught literature at Azusa Pacific University for five years before coming to Liberty, where he is a full professor in the English department. His research and teaching interests include World Literature, Theory (particularly Postcolonial and Postmodern), Film Studies, and Classics of the Western canon. His dissertation, “‘The Past is a Country from which we have all Emigrated’: Salman Rushdie’s Postcolonial and Postmodern Embrace of Memory,” a study of the ways that memory and identity intersect in the works of the contemporary novelist, won the 2014 Outstanding Graduate Student Research Award at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

In 2015, Stephen was awarded the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. His recent book, Global Migrancy and Diasporic Memory in the work of Salman Rushdie, was published by Lexington Books in August 2020.

Stephen, his wife, and his two daughters are members of Mercy Presbyterian Church. Bell enjoys reading, mowing the lawn, playing with his girls, watching shows/movies with his wife, and connecting with friends.

Dr. Yan Xie
Associate Professor of Chinese
College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Modern Languages

Dr. Yan Xie was born in China and is a native speaker of Mandarin. She came to the United States in 2001. She utilizes a student-centered approach to build up communicative competence and improve proficiency levels. She creates an immersive classroom environment to realize authentic learning. She serves as the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) as an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) certified tester in Mandarin Chinese. She integrates the World-Readiness Standards of ACTFL into instruction. Yan is a recipient of the President Award for Excellence in Teaching (2019-2020) and Provost Award for Excellence in Research Mentorship (2019-2020).

Yan loves to read, walk, and swim. In the summer, she often travels with her husband and daughter. She is a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church and Lynchburg Chinese Christian Church. She teaches adult Bible study and children’s Sunday school. In her spare time, she teaches herself piano.

Dr. Cindy Goodrich
Professor of Nursing
School of Nursing

Dr. Goodrich has been a registered nurse for over 40 years. She initially graduated from a diploma program in Poughkeepsie, New York. She later completed a BSN at Russell Sage College in Troy, New York, earned an MSN at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, a certificate in gerontology (post-masters) at Lynchburg College, and a doctorate in education from the University of Sarasota.

She has worked in various nursing roles including staff nurse, nurse manager, nurse educator, clinical nurse specialist, Magnet™ Program Director, and Research Coordinator. Dr. Goodrich has been a full-time faculty member at Liberty University since 1996. She has taught med-surg, pharmacology, community health, undergraduate research, and one of her favorites, pain management. Dr. Goodrich is currently certified as a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) through the National League for Nurses. Her areas of research interest include pain management, leadership, and education topics. Cynthia was a 2016 recipient of the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Dr. Goodrich was saved at the age of 23 and is a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church, which was started by Dr. Jerry Falwell. She feels blessed to be able to attend such a wonderful church. She enjoys exercising (especially aqua aerobics) and cooking.

2020-21

Dr. Brianne Friberg
Associate Professor of Psychology
School of Behavioral Sciences

Brianne is originally from Lynchburg, VA. She attended Mary Washington College, earning a B.S. in Psychology, as well as the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where she earned her M.S. and PhD in Human Ecology – Human Development and Family Studies. While at the University of Wisconsin, she also received two years of advanced training through the ID-Train program at the Waisman Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities. In 2017, she was awarded both the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Provost’s Award for Research Mentorship.

She loves creating memories and embarking on photographic adventures with her husband and son. Brianne attends Gospel Community Church, where her husband is the worship pastor, and enjoys volunteering with the Brookville community.

Dr. Andrew F. Milacci
Associate Professor of Spanish
College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Modern Languages

Andrew has a PhD in Spanish Language and Literature from the University of Maryland.

He has spent nearly two years living abroad in Latin American countries and has taught a wide variety of classes, from K-12 abroad to residential and online college and graduate courses, including Spanish grammar and conversation, composition, culture, literature, business Spanish, and translation. He is a co-winner of an Illuminate grant with which he co-created the LU Digital Museum of Hispanic Culture (online website), which has over 22,000 page views. His YouTube videos in Spanish and Portuguese have reached over 220,000 people around the world with knowledge of Spanish and Brazilian literature.

Andrew is married (nearly 10 years) to Joice, from Brazil, and has two children, Eleanor and Isaac. He serves as an interpreter at the Thomas Road en Español campus. As a hobby, he enjoys making furniture using traditional hand tools.

Edna Udobong, LL.M.
Associate Professor of Government
Helms School of Government

Edna taught international law, international human rights, immigration law, and adoption law as an Associate Professor of Law from 2010 to 2017 at Liberty University School of Law, and she currently teaches international relations and related courses at the Helms School of Government. She was a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Georgia and taught as Assistant Professor of Law, John Marshall Law School. She directed the Liberty Law Center for International Human Rights, served as Director, Helms School program evaluation and Senior Fellow at the Center for Statesmanship.

She initiated and established the partnership between the Fulbright program at Liberty University in 2011, and serves as the program advisor for the student program and the scholar Liaison for the scholar program. She is a two-time Fulbright U.S. Scholar grantee, the winner of the American Bar Association 2006-2007 Unsung Hero Award and the 2007 Special Achievement Award for contributions, ethics, and dedication to the rule of law mission of West Africa. In 2014, she received the Liberty University President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. She holds an LL.B., University of Lagos; B.L. Nigerian Law School; LL.M., University of Lagos; LL.M., Harvard Law School.  She is the recipient of the Harvard Law School Reginald Lewis Human Rights fellowship grant and served her fellowship at the Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Her publications focus on international law, international human rights, environmental law, and corporate responsibility.
