‘She Loves Me’ opens at Tower Theater

Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock’s quirky romantic musical “She Loves Me” opens this weekend on the Tower Theater stage, presented by the Liberty University Department of Theatre Arts.

This is the first time the show will be performed at the Tower Theater, but it has been an acclaimed Broadway show since 1963. It has been adapted several times, including for the movie “You’ve Got Mail.”

Liberty’s cast of 25 will perform with a live orchestra.

“It’s a romantic comedy with a simple, yet captivating musical score that will hopefully elicit smiles,” said Chris Nelson, director. “The show also is set during Christmas, which makes it fun combining the romantic elements with that time of year.”

The comedy is set in the 1930s and follows the relationship of Amalia Balash and George Nowack. The two work at Mr. Maraczek’s Parfumerie, arguing endlessly while unknowingly writing loving words to each other as part of a romantic pen pal service.

“The essence of the story is that love is right under our noses sometimes, but we’re so caught up in the idea of finding the perfect mate that we fail to see the people around us,” Nelson said.

“She Loves Me” runs Nov. 30 through Dec. 9 and will have eight performances. Showtimes and tickets are available through the Tower Theater website or by calling the Liberty Ticket Office at (434) 582-7328.
