Snowflex Centre attracts professionals for third-annual Dew Games

UPDATE (April 29): Despite inclement weather, the third-annual Dew Games was a success. Liberty alumnus Tim Steltzer, originally from Maine, took first place in both the ski rail jam and big air. Professional snowboarder and X Games participant Ryan Paul won the snowboard rail jam and big air competitions. The top female rider was Jessica Woody, a Liberty student and an instructor at Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre. The event was streamed live on LMSC’s webpage and Facebook page. One Facebook fan said they watched the competition from Indonesia.

Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre is holding its third-annual Dew Games on Saturday, April 28, drawing some of the best riders on the East Coast who will compete for $10,000 in cash prizes.

The event will feature a household name in the snowboard industry, Kevin Pearce, who was training for the Olympic Games when he suffered a traumatic brain injury. Now back in the business, Pearce will be the host for the event.

As the only year-round slope of its kind in North America, Snowflex has become a popular attraction for competitions. With a mild winter behind them, skiers and snowboarders from Colorado, Canada and all over the East Coast will be traveling to Virginia this weekend for the Dew Games.

“This is the only one this time of year for skiing and snowboarding,” said Drew Sherwood, general manager of the Snowflex Centre. “We have a wide range of competitors: 7- and 8-year-olds, men and women, adults, kids, college kids, non-college kids … people are still really hungry and thirsty for competition, so we’re going to be expecting more riders to going to come out and try to qualify.”

Among the competitors is professional snowboarder Ryan Paul. The 21-year-old X Games participant emerged in the snowboard scene in 2010 when he won the West Coast Invitational.

The Dew Games will have four categories of competition: skiers rail jam, snowboarders rail jam, skiers big air and snowboarders big air. The rail jam will feature a complex, custom-made rail for the competition that is fixed with LED lights.

Those who qualify on the morning of the competition will have the chance to compete against other finalists for cash prizes: $1,500 for first place, $700 for second and $300 for third in each category.

There will be free drinks from Mountain Dew and vendors and prizes available for spectators, who are invited to come out and watch all day. Registration and warm-ups begin at 9 a.m., and the winners will be announced at midnight.
