Alexander Hamilton Society chapter awarded Best New Chapter of the Year

The Liberty University chapter of the Alexander Hamilton Society was named Best New Chapter of the Year for its work in promoting the national, non-partisan nonprofit’s mission of providing constructive debate on basic principles and contemporary issues in foreign, economic, and national security policy.

Liberty’s chapter is one of over 50 on college campuses across the country, including new chapters at American, Carnegie Mellon, Southern Methodist, U.C. Berkeley, Harvard, Yale, Ohio State, Arizona, and Vanderbilt universities.

The award was presented last month at the AHS’ Student Leadership Conference, held at the Metropolitan Club in Washington, D.C.

Jordan Hayley, a rising senior at Liberty, founded the chapter in August 2018 and serves as president. She accepted the award along with fellow chapter members Jadyn Maziarz, Timothy Murcek, and Brielle Hoagland.

Hayley said Liberty’s chapter was recognized for its active participation, reach, and role in attracting high-profile voices in national security to campus. Speakers this past year included former military interrogator U.S. Staff Sergeant Eric Maddox, who played a direct role in the capture of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein; Dr. Michael Rubin, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute who spent his career fighting terrorism; and Dr. Peter Brookes, a senior research fellow in weapons of mass destruction and counter proliferation at The Heritage Foundation’s Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy. Maddox and Rubin were featured guests at Liberty’s Convocation, with more than 10,000 in attendance.

Hayley, who is pursuing degrees in history and international relations and is currently an intern with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in D.C., said her interest in the organization was piqued when she learned about the networking opportunities it provided students.

“Through the Helms School of Government, I was connected with their chapter director, heard more about the organization, and immediately fell in love with it,” she said. “I found out how it could not only help me personally in my career endeavors, but it could also help Liberty students all across campus. I’ve never seen an organization connect students to decision makers like AHS does.”

In the past year, through AHS’ support, seven Liberty students have entered prestigious internships in the national security and foreign policy fields.

Murcek is currently participating in the organization’s Summer Fellowship Cohort in D.C., where he is interning with Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

Hayley said the chapter is looking forward to growing its membership and inviting more high-profile speakers in the areas of national security, foreign policy, and economic statecraft to campus.

“This award will definitely keep the momentum going for us as we roll into a new semester,” she said.

The chapter is open to students from all academic programs. Learn more about Liberty’s AHS chapter on its Facebook page.
