Ph.D. in Counselor Education & Supervision receives CACREP accreditation
Liberty University has received accreditation for its Ph.D. in Counselor Education & Supervision program from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
Offered under the School of Behavioral Sciences, the program prepares candidates for ethical and effective counseling and for the training of counseling professionals. The 66-hour program requires weeklong on-campus courses, also known as intensives, so students can collaborate on research and other assignments as they receive one-on-one mentoring from their professors. The program also requires a clinical practicum and teaching, supervision, and leadership, research, or clinical internships. Students will complete and defend a dissertation.
“This accreditation is extremely important,” said Program Director and Associate Professor Dr. Lisa Sosin. “It means that we have met the rigorous CACREP standards in the areas of clinical counseling, teaching, supervision, research and scholarship, leadership and advocacy as we train up the next leaders in the counseling field.”
CACREP is an independent accreditation agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
“Ultimately, we want our students to be leaders and advocates who disseminate meaningful research and scholarship to the field and have a solid profession identity- ready and able to mentor the next generation of competent counselors,” Sosin said.
Dr. Steve Warren, dean of the School of Behavioral Sciences, said the Ph.D. program was originally developed more than a decade ago under the leadership of Dr. Ron Hawkins, founding dean and current provost, and Liberty’s founder, Dr. Jerry Falwell.
“From the program’s inception, the goal has been to equip doctoral-level counseling students with a Christian worldview as they become the next generation of counselor educators, making an even greater impact on those in the counseling field,” Warren said. “Liberty continues to demonstrate excellence in the field of counseling by reaching this accreditation milestone.”
The Ph.D. in Counselor Education & Supervision is the fourth Liberty program to receive CACREP accreditation. The M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, the M.A. in Marriage & Family Counseling, and the M.Ed. in School Counseling also earned accreditation in 2015. All four programs are accredited through 2023.
