Health Sciences professor releases ‘lifestyle’ book

Dr. Joseph A. Mix, a professor in Liberty University’s Health Sciences Department, is the author of “Play Your Hand Well: A Nutritional Approach to Wellness So You Can Live a Healthier Life Now!,” published by Liberty University Press. The book was released in May, and Mix held a book signing today at Liberty University Barnes & Noble Bookstore.

Mix, also a certified nutrition specialist, practicing dentist and researcher, said “Play Your Hand Well” is not a “diet book.”

“It’s a lifestyle book written in a non-threatening, positive and uplifting way,” he said, and draws upon his years of teaching and clinical experience to empower people and enable them to live a healthier life now.

The book includes sections on vitamin and mineral supplements, herbal medicinals, the glycemic index, the Mediterranean Diet, food quality, weight loss, cholesterol and heart disease. It also includes a never-before-revealed assessment index created by Mix to objectively determine the nutritional quality of food. Mix uses the index to reveal his list of the top 10 healthiest foods.

The recipient of both “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers” and “Who’s Who in America,” Mix is conversant in seven foreign languages. He received a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., and a Doctorate in Dental Medicine from the University of Pittsburgh. He completed a residency in general practice at Langley Air Force Base Hospital in Hampton, Va., and served as a dentist in the United States Air Force in Aviano, Italy, before entering private practice in New York. He taught operative dentistry at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey before coming to Liberty in 1995. He also holds an adjunct faculty appointment at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry in Richmond, is a visiting lecturer for the Global Health Program at West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown, and provides dental care for school children in Nelson County through the Virginia Department of Health.

Mix said he has always been interested in nutrition and issues related to oral health. He is a member of the American College of Nutrition and is a Certified Nutrition Specialist. He has conducted original research in the area of herbal medicine, is published in national peer-reviewed scientific journals, and frequently lectures on health-related topics.

Mix and his wife, Lynne, reside in Lynchburg and have three children: Ryan, Becky and Katie.
